Who Is Harriet Tubman? Quit Born: c. 1820, Dorchester County, Maryland Died: March 10, 1913, Auburn, New York Her birth name was Araminta Ross Married a free black man named John Tubman, which is when she took her mother’s name Harriet and became Harriet Tubman. She was a runaway slave who became known as the "Moses of her people.” She led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad for 10 years. She later became a leader in the abolitionist movement, and during the Civil War she was a spy for the federal forces in South Carolina as well as a nurse.

Harriet Tubman’s Life As A Slave Araminta (Harriet Tubman) along with her 10 siblings was born into slavery to Harriet and Benjamin Ross As a child she was “hired out” to be a nursemaid, which is someone who takes care of a child all night so as not to wake the mother In one instance she nearly died by saving a fellow slave. She was asked to help whip a slave that went to the store without permission, when she refused the other slave tried running away while the master was distracted so the master threw an iron weight at him, but instead hit her and almost crushed her skull. She was unconscious for days and ended up having seizures from this for the rest of her life. Quit

Escape from Slavery For fear of being sold she decided to escape. Her husband would not go, but instead she ran away with her two brothers. However, her brothers did not make it the whole way because they were afraid. She continued on without them and reached Philadelphia where she became a household servant. Being a servant she saved money so she could go back and save other slaves. Quit

What is the Underground Railroad? Quit The Underground Railroad was a secret network of safe houses where runaway slaves could stay on their journey north to freedom. Click to see a picture of the Underground Railroad routes

Conductor of the Underground Railroad Putting herself at great risk, Harriet, made the journey of the Underground Railroad many many times in order to save other slaves and bring them to freedom. She was breaking the law by saving these slaves and it was very dangerous for her being a runaway slave. There were even flyers out for the rewards of runaway slaves. 8 Quit “Moses of Her People” Harriet Tubman was known as the “Moses of Her People” because she was so well known for leading slaves to freedom. Many slaves sang the song “Go Down Moses” in hopes that their savior would deliver them from slavery just as Moses had in the Bible, delivering the Israelites from slavery.

A Brave Soul She made 19 trips to Maryland and helped 300 people escape from slavery, including members of her own family. At one point, the reward for her capture was $40,000. She was never captured, ensure the safety of the slaves she was helping to escape and is quoted with saying, "On my Underground Railroad I [never] run my train off [the] track [and] I never [lost] a passenger."
