Introduction to cardiovascular monitoring DR/ Noha Elsayed

COURSE NAME : Cardiovascular monitoring COURSE CODE: NMT (354) DAY: SUNDAY,TUESDAY Time : 9:10 A.M,12-1 P.M /12:1 P.M ( PRACTICAL ) 2

Instructor: Dr. Noha Elsayed Office hours : Wednesday 10 :12 A. M. E-mail: NEABDELAZIZ @inaya.edu.sa 3

COURSE OUTLINE 1.Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology 2.Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Electrophysiology and Electrocardiography 3.Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). 4.Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the development of dysrythmias. 4

5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of dysrhythmia interpretation. 6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of normal 12 Lead EKGs. 7. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cardiac pacemakers 8. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cardioversion/defibrillation and Code Blue review 9. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of abnormal 12 Lead EKGs and axis deviation. 5

Course objectives Label on a schematic drawing of the heart; the chambers, valves, and major vessels. Name the five major coronary arteries and indicate the surfaces of the heart they supply. Identify on a normal EKG tracing. Describe the five parameters to be measured,(rhythm, rate, P waves, PR interval, and QRS complex) to be considered while interpreting the strip. 6

List three major risk factors for CAD. Define and explain angina. State signs and symptoms of both classical and atypical myocardial infarction (MI). State the typical EKG appearance of early beats, late beats, slow rhythms, fast rhythms, blocked conduction, and ventricular fibrillation. Demonstrate and explain the anatomical positions of each of the six precordial leads and the four limb leads. List the criteria for QRS complex, ST segment, septal Q waves, and T wave deflection for each of the leads on a normal 12 Lead EKG 7

Demonstrate technique/procedure for obtaining standard 12 Lead EKG. Demonstrate and explain the anatomical positions of each of the six precordial leads and the four limb leads. List the criteria for QRS complex, ST segment, septal Q waves, and T wave deflection for each of the leads on a normal 12 Lead EKG. Demonstrate technique/procedure for obtaining standard 12 Lead EKG. 8

State three indications for insertion of pacemakers. Define the terms "fire", "capture", and "sense" as they apply to pacemaker function Define and explain cardioversion and defibrillation. State one indication for cardioversion and one indication for defibrillation. List two factors that can influence the direction of the ventricular axis. 9

Describe, using Limb Leads I and III, the QRS deflections produced by normal, left, and right axis. List the leads that are used to locate abnormalities on the anterior, inferior, and lateral surfaces of the heart. State the changes in QRS, ST segment, and T wave when there is injury, ischemia, and/or infarction present. State criteria used to locate left ventricular hypertrophy, left bundle branch block, and right bundle branch block 10
