What is.... Word choices/ language that aims to persuade and influence people to agree or disagree with their argument Persuasive language in other words

There are 3 types of loaded language that we need to know. Can you spot what those types are from the examples?

Emotive language- Jargon- Euphemisms- But what do these terms mean? Words and phrases that appeal to peoples emotions so they feel on side with the argument Technical words that can make people feel inferior or more trusting of the arguer (like they know their stuff) A phrase that means something bad but says it in a nicer way, so people may be more likely to go along with it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUuyUZCAvbQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUuyUZCAvbQ explanation of emotive loaded language

Such techniques are mostly used in the media to persuade people to: buy products agree with them sway public opinion

Note- Euphemisms are often associated with topics that are not usually deemed suitable for polite conversation- hence many relate to things such as being fired, death, sex, bodily functions etc Sometime the media pick up on these as it can make adverts appear funny or more appropriate ‘get a room’ He is ‘away with the fairies’ sorry they are ‘no longer with us’ She is ‘up the duff’ ‘the birds and the bees’

Jot down the loaded language/ persuasive images used in these adverts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99pQ0KJfdoEhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99pQ0KJfdoE charity advert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIyqcST29wQhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIyqcST29wQ smoker advert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2odtqcZRKc0http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2odtqcZRKc0 business network http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQSmqQSPiE0http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQSmqQSPiE0 Charmin ultra advert http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azttKmT0rVchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azttKmT0rVc 4 adverts EmotiveJargonEuphemism

Try to rewrite the following passage using emotive and exaggerated words to make it more persuasive? Will you give £2 a month to help an animal? Take the example of Smitty. He’s a young dog, only 6 months old. He was found tied up in the garden, waiting for his owners to return. He had been waiting for two weeks. His owners had left him, with no food, and no water, while they went on holiday. When we took him in, Smitty was too weak to stand. This kind of treatment happens to too many animals. £2 a month allows us to look after dogs like Smitty, to give them food, water and love. Will you help us to look after these creatures?

Your task- drama role-play In small groups you will be performing a drama role-play demonstrating the different types of loaded language as many types as possible! Your options: Stage an argument between characters Act out a sales pitch/ TV advert for something Write a newspaper tabloid headline/article (on a poster) and report it to the class

As you watch each performance note down the different types and examples of the loaded language they used
