2 William Holms McGuffy was a minister in Ohio. Born in Pennsylvania He became a ‘roving’ teacher at age 14 Got married, and had 5 kids Religious background: The resource which he used to write the books. The person who recommended him to write These was Harriet Beecher Stowe: the Abolitionist who wrote “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”

3 About the Books 7 different series, all in different reading levels The first is the ethical code, it has 55 lessons and teaches to be honest, kind and truthful.

4 About the Books The second has 85 lessons, with spelling, outlines, history, and sciences. Along with table manners, and attitude toward God. * If you are able to get through the second book you can read and write in English The third book is ‘junior high’ age. Focuses on oral reading The fourth book introduces good literature ( the bible and poetry.) Can be compared to American secondary schools

5 About the Books The fifth reader is used for elocutionary reading, for emphasis, diction, rate, Pitch and accent in speech. The sixth book came out in 1885, it had 186 collections, and great authors Were quoted. Composition, description, narraration, argumentation is all Included. Several sections of the Bible as well.

6 How does this fit into school? *These books exerted more literary tastes in America more than any other book excluding the Bible. Used as a self schooling text. Designed to teach reading to school children. The sales for these books are close in selling to the Bible and dictionary. Teaches moral conduct. Dealt with the natural curiosity of children, emphasized work, and independent spirit, encouraged an allegiance to country and an understand of the importance of religious values.
