Marquette University Jay R. Goldberg, PhD, PE Forum on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Biomedical Engineering Education

BIEN 146 Principles of Design (3 hrs) – (Fall Semester Senior Year) BIEN 147 Senior Design (3 hrs) – (Spring Semester Senior Year) Objectives: (Career preparation) –To develop technical skills Design, analytical Project management –To develop “soft” skills Communication (written, oral) Teamwork and interpersonal –To develop an understanding of the product development process Marquette University

Projects –Multidisciplinary teams (BME, EE, ME, IE) –Industry and faculty sponsorship –One faculty/industry advisor per team Lectures (helpful to projects or careers) Final course deliverables –Design, construct, and test prototype –Prove that design meets customer needs, solves problem BIEN 146 Principles of Design (3 hrs) – (Fall Semester Senior Year) BIEN 147 Senior Design (3 hrs) – (Spring Semester Senior Year) Marquette University

Describe particularly novel and/or effective methods you use to teach innovation & entrepreneurship Students encouraged to identify problems, submit original project ideas Use of multidisciplinary teams Lectures on concept generation Project sponsorship by start-up and established medical device companies Industry sponsorship provides exposure to business side of biomedical engineering Students provided with opportunity to observe surgical procedures, meet with sponsor’s customers Marquette University

How do you measure outcomes? Team Performance –Project Definition –Project Schedule –Customer Needs –Target Specifications –Generated Concepts –Manufacturing Process –Economic Analysis –Final Concept Proposal (oral and written) –Project Notebook –Prototype Individual Performance –Exams (P/F) –Peer Evaluations Final Grade –Project grade based on team performance items –Did team solve problem? –Final Grade = Project grade X Individual performance grade Marquette University

Describe a course project or exercise that exemplifies “best practices” Hydration Monitor to Prevent Dehydration in Athletes –students identified problem, submitted project proposal –obtained industry support of project –students attended seminars on writing business plans, intellectual property –researched and tested methods for measuring hydration levels in tissues Marquette University
