2 Course Title (1): Homewood BME Design Associates- BME Design Team –Longitudinal teams: freshmen-seniors –Team leaders are seniors: competitive process for selection –Required for ½ freshmen BMEs –Work with upperclassmen on ‘fun’ projects e.g. Amusement park with Holter monitor –Industrial contacts provide design projects –Project proposals are written for customer. Work is done primarily in the Spring Semester –Past projects: Johns Hopkins University

3 –Seminar style course –Speakers from large companies (Merck, DuPont, Medtronic, Abiomed (implantable artificial heart)), as well as small companies –Speakers once/week Spring semester 1/3 of speakers have their own companies –Students network with speakers after presentation Course Title (2): BME in the Real World Johns Hopkins University

4 Continuation of basic instrumentation course in the Fall Work on projects with clinical significance/relevance Work proposed by the students Course Title (3): Honors Instrumentation Course Johns Hopkins University

5 Describe particularly novel and/or effective methods you use to teach innovation & entrepreneurship Longitudinal Design Team Keeping it unstructured with freedom to the teams Involvement of Business and Management Students in the team to develop business plans Johns Hopkins University

6 How do you measure outcomes? Student grades- based on input from faculty, team judgment (peer evaluation) Projects judged by people from industry Customer surveys on product they receive Detailed survey of students and leaders Student follow up after graduation Johns Hopkins University

7 Describe a course project or exercise that exemplifies “best practices” Improved Foot Sensor –Alarms/vibrates (wireless) when too much pressure on heel or foot –Low cost, modular design, replaceable –Received funding from NCIIA (National Collegiate Innovators and Inventors Alliance) –Business plan developed by students of Carey Program (entrepreneurship program at JHU) –They called proposed company: “Intellisole” Johns Hopkins University
