2 Definition The treaty of Neuilly was a peace treaty between Bulgaria and the Allied powers and was dealing with Bulgaria’s role in World War 1 as one of the Central powers. It was negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference and signed at Neuilly Castle in Paris on November 27, 1919 and it established borders over disputed territory between Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Yugoslavia.

3 Countries Involved There were at least 21 countries present at Neuilly-sur-Seine, Paris when the treaty was signed. Among these 21 countries, the most important ones were the United States, Britain, France, Italy, and Japan. Belgium, China, Cuba, Greece, the Hedjaz, Poland, Portugal, Romania, the Serb-Croat-Slovene State, Siam and Czechoslovakia, were other associated powers.

4 Terms As a Central Power, Bulgaria received the least amount of land, and was required to reduce its army to 20,000 men, pay more than $400 million in reparations, and recognize the existence of Yugoslavia. Additionally, Bulgaria was required to cede western Thrace to Greece and parts of Dobruja to Romania.

6 Effects The treaty became known as the “Second National Catastrophe” by Bulgaria. Bulgaria had been given deprived access to the Aegean sea (area between Turkey and Greece). As tensions rose between Germany and Bulgaria with Greece, Greece decided to punish Bulgaria by forcing them to give up the territory of Macedonia which they had lost after WW1. Bulgaria was obliged to pay reparations, its military reduced, and forced to give up areas in the Western Thrace.
