Portfolio Prof. Lovegreen ENG 1101 Prof. Dabby ARCH 1110 Prof. Bazzi ARCH 1191 Fall 2015 Yu Jie, Li

Beginning of September 2015, where we just start our first class in the City Tech. Majority of us come into school with no knowledge on architecture and software on computer. Four mouth later, the semester about to end. It does not mean that we have obtained an affluent knowledge from design foundation 1 and visual study 1, but it is an open door for me to the architecture. The portfolio is like a time line for the activity during the semester. It record the process of us from nothing to something. Throughout the semester, there are four major projects that we experiences and discuses. Rectilinear Forms is the first project that help to developed sense of visual interest from the exterior and open space. Another project Pattern Abstraction is getting inspiration from daily life to create pattern and transform it to three dimensional. In addition, Cube Study were still help to develop strategies for translating two dimensional object into three dimensional. Unlike other projects, Folded Plane is project that focus on the interior instead of exterior. The first semester of design class is help to develop and explore our own sense of architecture and imaginations.

Rectilinear Form Rectilinear Form was the first project that we started off in the class. I constructed nine rectangular clay prisms with different sizes. Then composed them into three distinct structures. Each of the structure contain three clay blocks either set next to, supported or overlay on each other. Due to the handmade production, it created extra texture on the surface of the models. It is full of uneven hill like the surface of moon. The rectangular clay blocks has a rounded edges instead of sharp and pointy edges

Rectilinear Forms are a simple building blocks of design that can find in daily life. Most of box shape structure consist in rectilinear form. The image on the top left is one of my model. It is like a Flat Arch but slightly different from other. There is a block act like a column stand on the front. A load that lay on top of the column and cantilever on the front. There is another column connect to the back of load and support the load. A open space form between the blocks. For a Flat Arch, the lintel or load should be span between two columns and lay on top of columns The model on the left give sense of heavy due to its solid feeling. It is like a tank and bed. There is no space create in the model. Two rectangular prisms form a shape of letter L and overlay on a huge blocks of clay. The model on the bottom is more like a building. There is a cantilever structure and space is create in the opening space. Rectilinear Forms is a important topic to study of. Not only because display visual interest from the exterior and open space. But also understanding how a structure standing by itself during compose process. The lintel might fall down without the balance and supporting. Another thing is develop our creativity.

Pattern Abstraction Pattern exist every where in the daily life. People interpretive them differently. It can be simple lines that is repeating and overlay. It can also be a complex design of different shape with colors and textures. There are four part of the this project, Pattern Recognition, Pattern Abstraction, Pattern Creation and Generation of 3D Form. I used a kiwi that is cut in horizontally help to created the pattern. By further develop and explore the pattern that was created, transform 2D line into a 3D form.

Here is a image of a transverse slice kiwi. By sketch the texture of kiwi, it make me easier to observe and recognize the pattern. On the image I drawn, the kiwi is like a animal cell. The outer rang is the brown cell wall that is full of hair. The interior is the green fluid that contain different black organelles. The shape of fluid is series of triangle rotate around the center. Center of the cell is a white cell that have asymmetrical shape. After drawn what I seen, I interpreted and created an abstract geometric for the pattern. First, it is a circle shape that is like a transverse slice of the orange. Then, I connect the intersection on the outer rang to from a shape of hexagon. By overlay and left equal space between the hexagon and the triangle in the hexagon, it form a shape of snowflake. The 3D model is basically similar to the 2D pattern. By re-construct the geometric of the pattern, provide volume to the shape. Instead of space between the triangles, it is a tunnel that support the triangles. Overlay and invert the volume upside down on the base.

Cube Study Cube study is a continuation of develop strategies for translating two-dimensional lines into three-dimensional form. In this activity, we create our own idea instead of getting inspiration from the life. In the beginning of project, I generate a series of two-dimensional grids in the way I want or randomly. With the grids that was established, manipulated it to create three- dimensional interpretations.

The gird is five view (top, front, right, left and rear) of the cube that is going to create. It is half scale of the 5 feet by 5 feet cube. For each view, develop different grid systems based on rhythm and proportion. The darkest tone is place where void though the entire cube. The lightest is place where nothing change which mean it is on the surface. The tone that is on the middle is two step back and which is 2 feet lower. However, with the grids and tonal values that was established, explore the cube with foam strips. Apply the grids on the foam strips in double scale. Then use wire cuter to cut off the space don’t needed. After all the pieces is cut out, compose them to from a 5 by 5 cube. Architect often will like to place their onto a land scape by using Photoshop. It can help to show how the actual building will look like in the real life. I created the model in the Rhino and render it as the drawing. Then insect it in the Photoshop with the land scape that have same Vanishing Point. After it, I create a shadow for model to make it more realistic.

Folded plane Architectural form can be experienced in a variety of ways. The previous projects is mainly developed on exterior and the opening spaces. This project on planes is primarily based on the study of interior space. By using the interiors of the cube model from last project to create the space I wants. Not like cube model which have limitation to form the interior space. The plane model have more freedom on the designing the space.

The image on the right is the sketches of the interiors space in the cube model. The first image is like a endless tunnel that is expose to the light. The on next to the endless tunnel is a path ways. There is no space drawn on the back or give any sense of things behind the path. The sketch on the bottom is also a tunnel but with the end. There are something block on the end and a beam of light shot on the end of tunnel. Folded plane was the only project I just want to finish. The work is difficult compare to other project. The picture on the right is my second model for the project. Basically it is combination of two tunnel sketch. Base on the second model, I explore the last and final model. For this model, I only kept the tunnel that give end. Most of the space in model is created by the stair shape plane. Many idea of our project can be seen in the streets of NY. Every thing is relate to each other. Design one is help us to developed our creativity and imagination. Most of time, our through of project is come from the life. For our projects, there are many limitation one the scale and shape that is using. We never have chance to choose our own. However, even though there is only simple shape and pattern, It can still form an outstanding work.
