2 Copyright © 2006 Thomson Delmar Learning The Hematologic System Blood supplies body tissues with oxygen, nutrients, and various chemicals Blood also transports waste products to the appropriate waste system Blood consists of formed elements (cells) and liquid The combining forms for blood are hem/o and hemat/o

3 Copyright © 2006 Thomson Delmar Learning Blood The liquid portion of blood is called –plasma if the clotting factors are present –serum if the clotting factors are removed The main clotting proteins are fibrinogen and prothrombin The formed elements of blood are –erythrocytes (RBCs) –leukocytes (WBCs) –platelets

6 Copyright © 2006 Thomson Delmar Learning Structures of the Immune System Lymph fluid –also called interstitial fluid –brings nutrients and hormones to cells –carries wastes from cells Lymph vessels –carry lymph Lymph nodes –filter lymph and store b and t lymphocytes tonsils –masses of lymphatic tissue that protect the nose and upper throat –tonsill/o is the combining form spleen –mass of lymphatic tissue in cranial abdomen that filters blood thymus –Gland in cranioventral thoracic cavity that matures T lymphoctes Specialized cells –T and B lymphocytes

7 Copyright © 2006 Thomson Delmar Learning Oncology Oncology is the study of tumors –onc/o means tumor Malignant versus benign –malignant means cancerous –benign means nonmalignant Neoplasm –any abnormal new growth of tissue in which the multiplication of cells is uncontrolled and progressive Metastasis –pathogenic growth distant from the primary disease site –“beyond control” Carcinoma –malignant growth of epithelial cells Sarcoma –Malignant growth of connective tissue
