1 A Day in the Life of a High School Teacher Ashley Wilson

2  The median pay for a high school teacher is $55,050 per year.  A Bachelor’s Degree is required to be a high school teacher.  Internship/residency is the only on the job training required.  There are about 955,800 high school teachers. Pay, Requirements, Training, And Jobs

4 High School Teachers’ Duties:  Plan lessons in their subject  Assess their students(Strengths, Weaknesses, etc.)  Teach their students  Grade assignments to monitor progress  Communicate with parents about students  Work with Individual students to help them improve  Prepare students for required test  Enforce classroom rules  Supervise students outside class Duties

5  Planning lessons and teaching students are two duties that would come easy to me.  Communicating with parents and work individually with students would be more difficult for me. Duties Continued

6  High School Teachers can work in private, public, public magnet, charter, private religious, or secular schools.  After a certain number of years teaching, teachers have some job security, in most states(tenure laws)  Watching students grow can be rewarding, but teaching can also be stressful.  For example, certain schools might lack tools a teacher needs. Being responsible for students scores can also be stressful. Work Environment

7  Work hours vary depending on the school, but teachers often spend evenings planning and grading papers.(Also have meetings)  Most work a 10 month school year with a 2 month break.(Summer) Unless teach summer school. Work Schedule

9  All public high school teachers must have a bachelor’s degree. Most states also require that the teacher has majored in a subject area. Then, they enroll in a higher education’s teacher preparation program.(Classes in education and child psychology)  In these programs, they learn how to present stuff to students and how to work with different types of students.(Get some fieldwork as well)  Schools differ, private schools don’t have to meet certain requirements. 10  All public high school teachers must be licensed or certified.(High school or Secondary allows to teach 7-12)  Requirements vary by state. Must complete background check and annual professional development classes to keep license. Teachers must then undergo student teaching where they gain experience.(Time varies by state) How To Become A High School Teacher

11 Communication Skills- must be able to discuss with parents and administrators about students; work with other teachers and special education teachers Patience- must be patient when students struggle to understand certain material, students have different backgrounds and abilities which can make things hard Resourcefulness-got to be able to explain concepts in terms that high school students can grasp; must get students attention in learning and change lessons to meet students’ needs Important Qualities Of A Teacher

12 What do you love most about your job ? The light bulb moments, when you can see the students understand. What is most challenging about your job? There are so many expectations that involve more then just in class teaching. Why did you choose teaching? Use to teach dance for high school students. Loved high school kids and teaching them. What advise would you give a first year teacher? Find a mentor and develop a relationship with them. More positives than negatives. Interview With Mrs. McClure

13 Advise on handling parents? Contact parents early and often. Also keep in mind your on the same team. Favorite age group to teach? 9 th graders because they are discovering that they have their own opinion. Finding time grading papers? Hard to find time, sometimes on weekends and hours after school. Do you feel pay is adequate? Yes for bell to bell, but not for extra hours must put in. It’s not about the money. How do you feel about job hours? Start early, end early, like it.
