Evaluation Question 1 IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE THE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

The title of the film We decided to call our film ‘The Long Game’, referring to poker as it can be a long game to win, which links to the main plot device in the film which is a deck of playing cards. It also links to the narrative of our thriller as the protagonist thinks what he is doing is just a game. The title is quite typical of thrillers as it hints at what the film is about but without giving the whole plot away, another good example would be Se7en the antagonist in se7en attempts to commits 7 murders (7 replace the V in seven) which relates to the seven sins that the victims allegedly did in their lives.

Setting / location The two locations in our opening title sequence was a public park, and another in a forest. The public park gives a sense of protection and innocence. We wanted to convey a feeling that there are allot of people around the protagonist, minding there own business without even realising that the protagonist is in fact a murderer. The forest is very typical of thrillers because they are synonymous with eeriness and mystery and are often found away from society, a perfect place for committing a murder. The Park is typical of Thrillers as they are often set in urban, but quite areas like this park. The flashback of the forest is also typical of Thrillers for the same reason.

Costumes & props Our costume choices are extremely typical, often in thrillers the protagonist is generally an ordinary person placed in an extraordinary circumstance and that is shown in our opening sequence. Our protagonist could also be seen as the antagonist so we decided to dress the character as an ordinary person. He wore a big coat, black jeans and black shoes to show that anyone in society can be a murderer. This is also visible in the film 'Brick' where the protagonist 'Brendan' wears a hoodie, jeans and trainers, similar things to what our protagonist is wearing, they are simple everyday clothes.

Camerawork & editing  The Camerawork and editing is very typical of the thriller genre. Low angled camera shots are used to indicate the antagonists power. POV shots are used to immerse the audience in the tense and suspenseful action and distant angled camera shots to give the impression that someone is watching what's going on. Jump cuts are also used frequently in thrillers, making them a staple in the genre.  Our opening uses jump cuts but also uses which flashes which are used to transition from the present day to the past where the character has killed someone.

Title font & style The two fonts we have chosen to use are 'Blacklisted' and 'Coluna Rounded'. We chose 'Blacklisted' to use as our main title as it slightly resembled the font used on some playing cards but was different enough so that the whole theme around playing cards has to be found out by the audience. We also chose ' Coluna Rounded ' to be used for subtitles such as the production company, cast and crew etc. This font is simple but effective.

Story & how the OTS sets it up  The opening title sequence introduces us the main character, what he does and in our case who he kills. Whilst it may seem relatively common to use this method, showing a murder so early isn't used that much anymore as the plot generally builds up to a plot and then someone dies.

Genre & how the OTS suggests it  Our opening portrays that fact that is a thriller in a very typical way, with a yellow hue over the top of the footage and the flashbacks of chasing and killing, it really is a common way to show that our film is a thriller

How characters are introduced  The main character is introduced within the first few seconds of the film, we see him standing in a very shady stance with his head down, this indicates that he could be the antagonist, however it later become apparent that the film is based around this antagonist making it seem as if they are the protagonist. This seems to be very rare in modern thrillers. The character has a deck of cards which he uses to reflect on his past and his personality.

Special Effects  We didn’t really use any special effects when making our film, this is common as we were aiming for just a thriller, not a sub-genre. We did use fake blood in our flashback scene where someone is lying on the floor dead.
