WHAT IS BIOLOGY? Biology is science Bio – is a prefix that means LIFE logy- means the study of? Now put it together!! Biology is the study of life and living organisms!!!

CHARACTERIZING LIVING ORGANISMS How do we actually know something is alive? What are the characteristics of living organisms? Work with your assigned group: You will be given 10 minutes to identify items in the lab table whether these are living or non-living and why? Complete the table assigned to the group. Make sure to discuss, discuss, discuss …

What are the characteristics of life? Chapter 1-3

1. Living things are made up of cells Some are UNICELLULAR -made up of single cell Some are MULTICELLULAR - made up of many cells

2. Living things reproduce Asexual reproduction- has only one parent Sexual reproduction- requires two parents Asexual Sexual

3. Living things are based on a universal genetic code (DNA)

4. Living things grow and develop Growth : increase in size & shape Development: mature over time Living things have a life span

5. Living things obtain and use materials and energy Metabolism - chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials

6. Living things respond to the environment They react to stimulus, which is any signal to which an organism responds. Stimulus: Sun Response : Growth Stimulus: Hot pan Response : Remove hand

7. Living things maintain a stable internal environment Homeostasis: maintaining internal balance Example: Sweating prevents overheating by removing excess heat from the skin

8. Living things evolve Evolve: change over time to better survive in an environment. These changes take place over a long period of time & involve the entire population of organisms Beaks of finches

What Are The Characteristics of Living Organisms? Living things… are made up of units called cells reproduce. are based on a universal genetic code (DNA). grow and develop. obtain and use materials and energy respond to their environment. maintain a stable internal environment (homeostasis) when taken as a group, change over time- Evolution Please read Section 1-3, pages 17-20 for clarification

CharacteristicExamples Living things are made up of units called cells. Living things reproduce. Living things are based on a universal genetic code. Living things grow and develop. Living things obtain and use materials and energy. Living things respond to their environment. Living things maintain a stable internal environment. Taken as a group, living things change over time. Many microorganisms consist of only a single cell. Animals and trees are multicellular. Maple trees reproduce sexually. A hydra can reproduce asexually by budding. Flies produce flies. Dogs produce dogs. Seeds from maple trees produce maple trees. Flies begin life as eggs, then become maggots, and then become adult flies. Plants obtain their energy from sunlight. Animals obtain their energy from the food they eat. Leaves and stems of plants grow toward light. Despite changes in the temperature of the environment, a robin maintains a constant body temperature. Plants that live in the desert survive because they have become adapted to the conditions of the desert. Section 1-3 Characteristics of Living Things

CLOSURE (JOURNAL) DATE: List 5 characteristics that distinguish living things from non-living things. Reflection… “No matter how good teaching may be, each student must take the responsibility for his own education”. John Carolus S.J.
