Dealing with waste

Waste production Waste reduction is the central element of lean production. The term waste is used to describe anything that is inefficient in the production process. Some factors leading to waste production are; Over-production, producing more than the customer wants/needs. Waiting, for the production process to begin or excessive machine time/downtime. Transportation, transporting goods and bad handling of goods. Damaged goods have to be taken back. Long distance travel high fuel costs.

Waste Reduction Incineration Incineration is a good way to dispose of waste. However, you cant burn everything. This is because if certain materials are burned they give off toxic gases which must then be release into the atmosphere. Therefore creating even more waste that a business must dispose of safely. GET SOME BBK The process of incineration would be used to dispose of any waste materials that are produced during the production process. Incineration gives out gases such as CO 2 the ash is given out from burning waste is harmful to the environment. The cost of disposing of these gases are very high and other recycling methods may be cheaper.

Recycling, waste reduction Plastic is one of the most popular and useful materials of modern times. However, its popularity is part of the problem: we now use about 20 times more plastic than we did 50 years ago. However, we can optimise the lifespan of plastics by reusing and recycling items as many times as possible. Did you know? 92% of all UK local authorities now offer collection facilities for plastic bottles either from your kerbside collection scheme or at recycling centres. What about other plastics? A recent study demonstrated mixed plastics packaging can be mechanically recycled and is both economically and environmentally effective to do so. Further work is being conducted in this area and it is hoped that the UK will have comprehensive infrastructure for the collection, sorting and reprocessing of these valuable resources in the UK in the near future.

Recycling plastics Plastics are:- sorted shredded washed melted pelletised It is a two-stage process: Sorting is mainly done automatically with a manual polish Plastic is either melted down directly and moulded into a new shape, or shredded into flakes then melted down before being processed into granulates
