3. Focus Activities: Before the lesson, the class will: Be introduced to the 16 th president of the United States. Review the current president and what president’s do in office. Locate the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC and Washington DC on a map. Talk about why the country created a National Park Service and how they help with the upkeep of the memorial. Talk about Lincoln’s famous hat and have an activity that has the kids make a small example of his hat with construction paper and toilet paper tubes.

4. Developmental Activities: When in the computer lab: Log on to the computer and open up Internet Explorer Type in the link: http://www.nps.gov/featurecontent/ncr/linc/interactive/deploy/index.htm#/in troduction http://www.nps.gov/featurecontent/ncr/linc/interactive/deploy/index.htm#/in troduction Every student needs to watch at least 2 videos under the reflection category (left side). After each video students need to summarize in the own words what the video was about. Include how Lincoln was a part of the history video you watched. Each paragraph is 5-6 complete sentence for full credit. After coming the videos students can to the interactive memorial panorama (on the right side of the main link). Students need to complete the panorama questions handed out before entering the lab.

7. Lesson Summary We can’t take a 1 st grade social studies class to Washington DC, so a virtual field trip is the second best thing. Virtual field trips open the world to infinite learning opportunities. This site is both information, kid-friendly, and fun to explore. The videos and panorama are easy to use and teach kids all about Lincoln’s presidency, the 1860s, and the Lincoln memorial. Abraham Lincoln was an important president to our history and this website helps kids learn all about him. This lesson both involves technology, arts and crafts, and is packed full of Lincoln’s history!
