U3A General Computing Class Autumn 2013 Week 4 of 10 weeks. Mondays 4:15 to 5:45 pm Half Term – Miss 21 and 28th of October 2013 U3A new members tea & cakes at Memorial hall. Wednesday 6 th November 2013.

Writing a letter in Word Using Microsoft Word 2007 The world’s leading Text Editing program. Not the latest, is now Office 2010, but currently the most used.

Big changes from Word 2003 All the previous versions of Word used the “File Edit View Favorites Tools Help” list of commands. This has now been replaced by a new “Ribbon” system, as we shall see. This was very intimidating for us earlier 2003 users. 2007 is reckoned to be easier for new students who have never used Word before.

Quick Introduction To start Word use - Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Word 2007

Word is Very complex, to be able to handle complex documents. Try to understand only what you need to and I describe. In the upper-left corner of the Word 2007 window is the Microsoft Office button. When you click the button, a menu appears. You can use the menu to create a new file, open an existing file, save a file, and perform many other tasks. Next to the Microsoft Office button is the Quick Access toolbar. This provides you with access to commands you frequently use. You can add more using the tiny Later, try adding Print Preview.

The Ribbon The Ribbon is a short list of groups of commands – Home, Insert, Page Layout, References etc. When one is selected different lists appear below arranged in groups. Take note of the following. Home- In clipboard- Cut, Copy, Paste. In Font- The font type and size, BIU. In Paragraph- Align Left, Centre, Right and Bullets. In Editing- Find, Replace, Select. Insert- Picture, Clipart your choice. Page Layout- In Page Setup Margins, Orientation Size.

Other things The big white area is where you type. The usual slider bar on the right allows you to move around in the document. The ruler bar is a white bar just above where you type. It’s used for setting Indents – where typing starts from, and Tab marks – to add big gaps in text. At the bottom is Page & Word count, Spelling & Grammar check progress, View types & Zoom slider bar. Deleting text. Backspace key is to the right of = marked ← and deletes text to the left of the cursor. Delete, marked as such, deletes text to the right.

Word Basics Now continue presentation on document ExampleWordDocument e.doc This will include instructions for today's practical. Also lots of good word lesson documents in S:\U3A\U3A - Monday Group\WK 4 and on http://www.creweandnantwich-u3a.org.uk/ under Course/Groups, Computing & I.T.
