2 Since the French and Indian War… England takes over Michigan but the French and Indians still remain Relations between all parties initially pretty good 1761-1762: England raises trade values (prices) and refuses to trade gunpowder Without powder, Indians can’t hunt

3 Pontiac Plots April 27, 1763: Pontiac holds a meeting on the Ecorse River They will enter Fort Detroit promising peace They will present color-coded wampum Then attack if the situation was right May 7, 1763: Pontiac and his soldiers enter the fort British soldiers are all on alert Pontiac does not attack, ends up leaving the fort Detroit Institute of Arts – Detroit, MI Smithsonian Museum of American History – Washington D.C.

4 The Attack Begins May 9, 1763: Pontiac puts Fort Detroit under siege Siege – To surround your enemy and not allow supplies or other necessities to either enter or exit Siege lasts for about five months Indians start to leave in order to gather food for the winter France tells Pontiac they signed a peace treaty with the English and would not send him supplies One of the few forts that remained in British hands

5 Fort Michilimackinac June 2, 1763: The Ojibwa play a game of lacrosse just outside the fort During the game, they initiate an attack against the British They killed 20 soldiers (some by ritual) and took the fort They held this fort and others until 1766 Pontiac and the British made peace Colonial Michilimackinac – Mackinaw City, MI

6 Results of Pontiac’s Rebellion Proclamation of 1763 – British settlers cannot cross the Appalachian Mountains Michigan is to be populated by Indians and only the British soldiers in the forts Jean de Sable comes to Michigan One of the earliest documented people of African descent to come to the area Pontiac is killed by Indians in what is today Illinois (1769)
