1 Bell Ringer #5 – 2/4/09 1. How did the Emancipation Proclamation affect the Union army? 2. Describe the 54 th Infantry. 3. Describe the colors and nicknames of each side. Objectives: 54 th Memoir Presentations, Understand early battles of the Civil War.

2 The 54 th Infantry  Pairs will present 54 th Infantry “memoirs” today.  Those who did not “pass” the Frederick Douglass quiz: Earn up to 4 added points on quiz by writing a personal response on the documentary and Douglass.

3 Early Battles of the Civil War  Fort Sumter – Union fort in S.C., attacked by Confederate troops, 1861. War “in the air”.  Battle of Bull Run – Virginia, Confederate troops forced Union troops back into WashDC & declared victory. Confed General Thomas Jackson nicknamed “Stonewall” Jackson for creating a troop “wall”.

4 Battle of Antietam  Maryland, 1862. Bloodiest single day in U.S. military history.  26,000 died; Union victory

6 What names!  There is a popular legend that the slang term for prostitutes is derived from the last name of Union Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker because of parties at his headquarters and the band of prostitutes that followed his division.  Union Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside’s facial hair led to the term “sideburns”
