Population Density And Distribution : North America and Brazil

WHAT IS POPULATION DENSITY? Population Density refers to the number of people living in one unit of land. Population Density = Total number of people / Total land area

WHAT IS POPULATION DISTRIBUTION? Population Distribution Is The Pattern In Which People Are Spread Out Within An Area.

CASE STUDY :BRAZIL Brazil’s population is approximately at 185 million 62% of Brazilians are under 29 years of age Brazil’s average population density is only 59 people per square mile as of 2010 (23 per km2) Population Distribution in Brazil can be described as exceedingly varied and uneven The most densely populated areas are the south, south east and north east. 90% of Brazilians are living within 500km of the coastline of the Atlantic. The North and North east of Brazil are extremely sparsely populated with some places having as little as 1 person per km2

WHY? Brazil is largely made up of immigrants. They tend to settle along the coast because their ancestors first arrived there and built up the area. Migrants are attracted to the coastal areas because it is easy to import and export goods. The south east became populated because it was found to be plentiful in raw materials such as coffee beans, minerals, gold and diamonds which opens a chain of employment. 66% of Brazil’s Industry is based in South East and there are better education opportunities and easily available forms of recreation. The Brazilian Government influenced coca-cola to set up in the south east and people flocked to live there. The north east on the other hand lacks the ability to yield crops or rear animals and so is sparsely populated. Due to the lack of prospering industries in the north east many have migrated to the south east. The East Coast zone and south east are heavily populated due to an excellent water supply because the Atlantic Ocean is a source region, and fertile soils due to the weathered, volcanic rock below.

Population Density of Brazil: According to the map which uses colour to show the density, the south east and parts of the east are the most densely populated as compared to the north and north east.

Population distribution of Brazil : as seen on a dot map.

NORTH AMERICA North America’s average population density is even lower than Brazil’s at 32 people per square mile. In the US it’s 27 people per km2 and in Canada it’s only 2 people per km2. 75% of Canadians live within 160 km of the main border within the US. Parts of the south western US have become densely populated. The greatest concentration of population in the US is in the North East. More than half of Americans live in countries adjacent to the Atlantic, Pacific oceans, Gulf of Mexico and Great lakes. In Canada the main concentration of population is in southern parts of Ontario and Quebec.

WHY? Extremely Cold Temperatures cause Canadians to move towards the main border within the US in search of warmer temperatures. The parts of south western US that have become densely populated because of major development resulting in Phoenix, Tucson and Las Vegas which have become huge attractions because of a higher standard of living, urbanisation and recreational opportunities. Large Parts of South western US remain sparsely populated as it is still mainly desert or semi desert and there is a major water crisis. The North Eastern part of The US has the greatest population concentration because it is the greatest manufacturing region and so offers major employment. It is also urbanised and draws crowds of people seeking the advantages of an urban environment. Southern parts of Ontario and Quebec draws a Canadian crowd because of the presence of extremely large, developed cities such as Toronto and Montreal. Accessibility of Urban employment is now the main influence for population density and distribution in North America as opposed to the location of natural resources such as coal, iron ore and oil which was the preference in the past.
