2 Satisfaction  1) Why should we care whether workers are satisfied with their jobs?  2) Often job satisfaction is broken into two types: –Intrinsic rewards – Intangible benefits –Extrinsic rewards – Material benefits

3 Satisfaction  3) Let’s think of factors that might influence job satisfaction?  4) Most important factors are: –Self direction –Belongingness –Organizational structure and policies –Union membership –Gender and Race/ethnicity –Age

4 Job Commitment  1) Job Commitment – willingness to stay on the job and gives one’s full energy.

5 Alienation  1) Two kinds of alienation –A) Marx’s concept of alienation argues that capitalism (regardless of position) separates workers from species being and hence causes alienation. Marx argued we are alienated in four ways: Marx argued we are alienated in four ways: other workers the product the process creativity. According to Marx, Alienation is an objective condition. Satisfaction is subjective.

6 Alienation  1) Two kinds of alienation, continued. –B) Blauner argued that alienation is not only a structural factor of capitalism. It is also experienced by individual people.

7 Consequences of Dissatisfaction, Lack of Commitment and Alienation  1) Lower productivity  Absenteeism  High Turnover Rate  Resistance (something you don’t do) and Sabotage (something you do)
