The true test of a good edit is its TRANSPERENCY

Jump Cuts An edit where the subject stays the same and the camera angle does not change by 30 degrees, or the image size does not change by 30 percent. Most common in talking heads and interview programs. Usually covered up with REACTION and CUTAWAY shots. What are these?

Cutaway –Visual of something that is not in the primary scene but is relevant to that scene. –Should be motivated by story rather than to only cover up mistakes. –Can be used to emphasize what is important. –Can be used to create irony.

Cu-Ins –A close -up of something in the primary scene – Provides significant new information – Creates tension and emphasis

Reaction Shot –A visual of someone or something reacting to someone or something else in the primary scene –Reaction can be more important than action

180 Degree rule Draw an imaginary line through the scene you are shooting, creating a semi-circle of 180 degrees. All camera positions should be on one side of this Axis.

If scene requires a change of screen direction, there are two ways to accomplish the reversal while keeping your audience oriented. Move the camera across the imaginary line, taking your viewer with you as the action changes direction. Have the subject move across the line, again keeping your viewer with you as screen direction shifts.

Background and Foreground continuity An editor must be aware of all elements in a scene.

Cut On Action An edit that is made during an action of any kind will be more transparent than an edit where no movement occurs Gives the shot motivation.

Clean Entrances and Exits Allows the story to move forward Can be used to condense time Don’t have to match action- what is Match Action?

Match Action When an edit is made in the middle of an action and it transition to a different location. Used instead of “ Clean entrances and exits”.

Strategic Hints Review your edits to keep the flow going Be resourceful and Cheat ( sometimes things weren’t really shot in that order) Use out-takes if you need them. Sometimes the best performance is in the throw-away category. Use good reaction shots and cutaways more than once, if you are short of video and they are appropriate. Let audience fill in the gaps. You can cut a lot out- 2001 example.e
