2 HEALTHY PEOPLE 2020 Objective To “prevent inappropriate weight gain in children aged 2-5 years and 6-11 years” (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). The students involved in the activities are 5 years old to 6 years old at Islamic School of Greater Kansas City.

4 ACTIVITIES MOVE!!! Exercise for strength and flexibility (The Nemours Foundation, 2014) Teaching kids different types of exercise activities

5 ACTIVITIES IDENTIFYING HEALTHY DRINKS Know what constitutes unhealthy drinks Know that drinking in moderation is important Know healthier drinks to choose

6 ACTIVITIES IDENTIFYING HEALTHY FOODS Use of food pyramid Identifying what food belonged to what group Identifying amount of servings for each (United States Department of Agriculture, 1999)

7 ACTIVITIES IDENTIFYING HEALTHY FOODS Match different foods on the healthy plate Use of healthy plate initiative to show proportion of each food (United States Department of Agriculture, 2014)

8 ACTIVITIES MAKING HEALTHY SNACKS!!! Making healthy snacks with oats, granola, chocolate chips, and raisins Children are taught to make healthier snack choices (United States Department of Agriculture, 2014)

9 ANALYSIS OF GROUP PROJECT Service project was successful – children were engaged throughout activities Adding children ages 7-12 to the project.

10 CONCLUSION Health promotion – making healthier food choices Disease prevention – reducing chances of obesity through exercise and healthy eating
