Satire Satire is traditionally and primarily a literary, written form. Although in practice it can also be found in the graphic and performing arts.

Satire...more... In satire, vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement.

Satire...Yet Again... A common feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm—"in satire, irony is militant" But, parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing.

Satire...Militant Irony... This "militant" irony or sarcasm often professes to approve (or at least accept as natural) the very things the satirist wishes to attack. Also present is Dramatic Irony--the audience knows more than the character.

Satire: Two Types Horatian: Named for the Roman satirist, Horace, this playfully criticizes some social vice through gentle, mild, and light-hearted humor. It directs wit, exaggeration, and self-deprecating humor toward what it identifies as folly, rather than evil. Horatian satire's sympathetic tone is common in modern society. Examples: Jonathan Swift, S.N.L. (when it was good), The Simpsons, Garrison Keillor

Satire: Two Types Juvenalian: Named after Roman satirist Juvenal, this type is angrier and more abrasive. Juvenalian addresses social evil through scorn, outrage, and savage ridicule. This form is characterized by irony, pessimism, sarcasm, moral indignation and personal invective, with less emphasis on humor for humor's sake. Examples: Joseph Heller (Catch-22), Mark Twain, Stephen Colbert, South Park

Satire: Voltaire' Candide Which form of Satire does Voltaire fall under? What traits in Candide indicate that sort of satire?

Traits of Satire (Look Up If Needed!) Irony Dramatic Irony Sarcasm Double Entendre/Puns Hyperbole/Exaggeration Juxtaposition Comparison Analogy Parody/Spoofing
