2 6.3.7.A: Explain the impact of public goods and services on the local community and state. At one time PA was one of the biggest railway systems for importing and exporting goods. We used railways to transport raw materials such as iron and steel all over the world. Now our local community has gone from an industrial center to a technology center. Technologies include medicines and robotics which are used for many things. 5.2.6.D: Explain why participation in government and civic life is important. Communities were more dispersed hundreds of years ago because people didn't rely on governments for everyday life. Today because we are so tight nit and the population has grown we need more services then they had years ago. Government needs the people and people need the government to function in our changing world for technology and medicinal purposes among other things.

6 Educational Resources include field trip packages, science on the road, Scitech resources and planetarium that can all be accessed online at: http://www.carnegiesciencecenter.org/educators/educator- resources/ http://www.carnegiesciencecenter.org/educators/educator- resources/ STEM Workshops- Society is built on science and technology. In order to be educated and engaged citizens of the world in the 21st century, everyone needs to know and understand the basics of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). SciTech events feature the growth areas of Pittsburgh: Biotechnology, IT, Robotics, Advanced Materials Processes, Environmental Technology, and Nanotechnology — and connect visitors with leading scientists and technologists in a fun, dynamic atmosphere.

8 Activities encourage students to DO hands on work and DO history. DO history by constructing a building that can withstand an earthquake of 7.2 the day of the 1989 World Series. Encourages students to learn about how they are a part of geography, which is about how the physical nature of the world…mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans, deserts, and everything around and how it affects people, where they live and how society changes.Social studies is the study of how people act and live with one an other.Major catastrophic events like an earthquake change the way people live and socialize. How does this affect where people choose to live? What supports would a building have to have to withstand an earthquake? Where do earthquakes mostly occur and why? Encourages students to look at how technology has changed our way of life. Students can look at past PA history to now and the advances we have made. Look at how medicines, trains, cars, cancer treatments, robotics, and other technological advances have helped shape the way we live now. We need the participation of everyone in the community to get involved and help shape our future. Pennsylvania is making strides in medicine just like we had done in 1886 by being on the top of the railway industry compared to now. How was life different or the same? How was Pennsylvania important in the industrial age?
