Historical Time Period 1830-1840

“Now Miss Doyle, if you would be so good as to indicate which is your trunk, I have a man here to carry it.” Page 7 Paragraph 7 O The way he speaks to her indicates the time period. Present day, although we are typically polite in situations like that, we do not speak like that. This indicates that this book takes place further back in time. O Also, nowadays we would use a suitcase not a trunk to carry our things when making a big trip.

“”Pleased to meet you,” I said, dipping in a curtsy” Page 7 Paragraph 6 O The fact that Charlotte curtsies to Mr Grummage to show respect gives an example of time period because although we still may use the curtsy today, the practice of it on a regular basis died in the late 1300s to the early 1900s.

“ Now, be so good as to board the Seahawk. At once!” Page 15 Paragraph 4 O The Seahawk is a ship that Charlotte is to travel to make it to America. This is a very good indication of time period, because the age of air travel didn’t begin until 1900s. O This is a direct representation of time period because it gives you a time period of which its not in to help you better understand the time period it is in.

“Indeed, he held out a lantern indicating an entryway in the wall of the quarter deck” Page 18 Paragraph 3 O The usage of a lantern for a light source shows that it is not near present day. O The author is correct with his information. Although the fist eclectric light bulb was created in 1800 by Humphrey Davy, the first incandescent light bulb wasn’t created until 1879 by Thomas Edison. O This also helps you figure out when this novel takes place because it has to be before 1879.

“When I awakened this time to the sound of four bells..” Page 35 Paragraph 1 O The first electrical mechanical alarm clock was not created until 1847 which was about 15 years after Charlotte is on this ship. This can definitely help in the understanding of the time period in this novel.

“…I hardly noticed the pitch and roll of the ship, nor minded the ever present damp.” Page 66 Paragraph 1 O As technology has grown, so has the quality of sea travel. Better built ships nowadays would most likely not have the ever present damp. That would most likely cause mildew which would most certainly cause unhappy passengers. O On the Seahawk, cleanliness wasn’t the top priority or anywhere near as important as it is present day.

“Breakfast was set out in steerage, at the mates’ mess. Served by Zachariah, it consisted of badly watered coffee and hard bread with a dab of molasses, though as days passed, the molasses grew foul. Dinner at midday was the same. Supper was boiled salted meats, rice, beans, and again bad coffee. Twice a week we might have duff, the seaman's delight: Boiled flour and raisons.” Page 67 Paragraph 5 O When I think of modern day ships being used to transport “people” to a destination, I typically think of a cruise ship. On cruise ships you have buffets of delicious food which is the opposite of what Charlotte is receiving on her trip.

“The captain kindly allowed me to read a biblical passage to the men before he offered reminders of their duty to ship and God.” Page 68 Paragraph 1 O Unless it was a religious cruise of some type of religious ship, you typically wouldn’t be allowed to read biblical passages in case you would offend someone’s religion who is also on board.

“Though I desired to make it clear that the crew and I were on different levels,…” Page 68 Paragraph 5 O In modern times, we are all considered “equal”. Although some have more than others and may not directly stand equally in that sense, it is impolite to brag about your social standing, whereas in this book it is a common practice to show that others around you are below you.

“In all your years have you ever seen, ever heard of a girl who took up crew’s work?” “No sir, I never did.” “So, then, is it not unusual?” “I suppose.” Page 174 Paragraph 15 O Women didn’t really start to work for their rights until late 1840s. This is accurate for the book because many times it mentions how woman/girls shouldn’t be doing what Charlotte is doing.
