3 UNDERSTANDING THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father which art in heaven means we're praying to our father who is in heaven.  We start the prayer out this way so we know that we're praying to God our father and we're not alone.  God likes it when we call him father and he wants us to talk to him like we talk to our own father.  God is our loving father and we are his special children. Hallowed be thy name is next and it means holy is your name.  Even though God wants us to call him our father, he is still God.  It's sometimes really hard to understand who God is and what he's like.  How did he make us?  How is he perfect and never makes mistakes?  God just wants us to remember that we need to treat him super special because he is God and when we pray to him we need to be respectful. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.  If we think about where God lives, we know its pretty great.  The Bible says that in heaven there will be no more crying, God will live with us, and there will be no hunger or hurt there. This part of the prayer says let your kingdom come.  Let your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.  This means we are  praying that people would live in peace and love with one another the way it is in heaven.  It reminds us that we should be living the way God wants us to everyday. Give us this day our daily bread means give us today all that we need.  Keep in mind that these are things that we can't live without.  We don't need video games and princess dolls those are the things that we want, we need food, water and shelter. Even though we pray for things we need, that doesn't mean we'll get them.  There are still people with no food in many parts of the world but that doesn't mean we stop praying for these things.  When we ask God for things that means we trust Him and we'll leave the decision to God. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  This next part of the prayer is asking for forgiveness for our mistakes.  Forgiveness means that we are sorry for something we've done and we don't want to do it anymore.  But we also need to forgive people who have done wrong to us.  Sometimes others hurt us very badly, so we need to ask God to help us forgive them because it's really hard or we don't want to.  If we forgive others, God will forgive us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Is it sometimes tempting to do something you're not supposed to?  This part of the prayer is really neat because it asks God to help us to know the right thing to do.  To protect us against the evil that is in the world and keep us away from it. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.  The last part of the prayer is the best part!  For yours is the kingdom means that Heaven will last forever and will always be God's.  God also has all the power and all the glory FOREVER!  It makes me happy knowing that God will never die and he's the strongest and greatest.  With God we will always win!

4 Family Devotional #1 “Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name,”
Mealtime Prayer: Give thanks to God for being our great and awesome Father in Heaven Appetizer: Go around the dinner table and each person name as man characteristic of God as possible. Keep going around the table until you can no longer think of any more names Main Course: Have you ever had someone call you by a different name? What names have you been called? How does it make you feel when someone calls you a different name? How do you think it makes God feel when we address by a name that is not his name? What are some names that you call God when you pray? When Jesus was teaching his followers how to pray (Matthew 6:9), Jesus said that we should say “Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name” How did Jesus want his followers to begin their prayer? What does this mean? (Younger Children can color the picture) Our Father which art in heaven means we're praying to our father who is in heaven.  We start the prayer out this way so we know that we're praying to God our father and we're not alone. God likes it when we call him father and he wants us to talk to him like we talk to our own father.  God is our loving father and we are his special children Hallowed be thy name is next and it means holy is your name. God has no wickedness or evil in him. God is perfect and set apart.  Even though God wants us to call him our father, he is still God Table Talk: When you think of God being your Father, what comes to your mind? Do you want to know God better why or why not? How can we as a family draw nearer to God? Vitamins and Minerals: Read the entire Lord’s Prayer and see if anyone can recite it. The activity for this family time is that the whole family pray together either after dinner or before the kids go to bed. Pray to God about how grateful you are that he is your father.

5 Family Devotional #2 “Give us each our daily bread,”
Mealtime Prayer: Have everyone pray about one thing that they are most grateful for. Appetizer: If the house caught on fire and there were only three things that you could take with you, what would you take and why? What about if we could only take one thing as a family-what would it be? Main Course: What are the things that we need to live? Go through each one and talk about how it would effect your life or our family if we did not have it? When Jesus was teaching his followers how to pray (Matthew 6:9), Jesus said that we should say “Give us today our daily bread” Does anyone know what this passage means? Why should pray for this everyday? Give us this day our daily bread means give us today all that we need.  Keep in mind that these are things that we can't live without.  We don't need video games and princess dolls those are the things that we want, we need food, water and shelter. Even though we pray for things we need, that doesn't mean we'll get them.  There are still people with no food in many parts of the world but that doesn't mean we stop praying for these things.  When we ask God for things that means we trust Him and we'll leave the decision to God. God provides our family with all that we need although some time we don’t get what we want Table Talk: What is the difference between wants and needs? What are some things that are really important to you that you want but is not a need? What would your life be like if God gave you everything you wanted? Would you be happier why? How would you feel if you did not have clothing to wear? Or shelter (home)? Food? Would you rather have all you wanted or clothing? Vitamins and Minerals: Read the entire Lord’s Prayer and see if anyone can recite it. Lead the family in prayer giving thanks to God for meeting your families needs. What if they keep doing the same thing over and over again-Is it hard to forgive them? Why? Would you want someone forgive you if you kept making them upset? What would you feel like if they decided to stop forgiving you? What if God stopped forgiving you? When Jesus was teaching his followers how to pray (Matthew 6:12), Jesus said that we should say “Forgive us our sins, for we forgive everyone who sins against us Does anyone know what this passage means? Why should we ask God for forgiveness of our wrongs everyday? Why should we forgive those who do wrong to us everyday? This next part of the prayer is asking for forgiveness for our mistakes.  Forgiveness means that we are sorry for something we've done and we don't want to do it anymore.  But we also need to forgive people who have done wrong to us.  Sometimes others hurt us very badly, so we need to ask God to help us forgive them because it's really hard or we don't want to.  If we forgive others, God will forgive us. Share how important it is to you that God forgives you of your mistakes and how God’s forgives motivates you to forgive others Table Talk: Are there things that we sometime do to one another that can hurt or upset each other? What can we do to make sure that we don’t keep upsetting one another and not holding grudges? Is it easier to ask someone to forgive you or to forgive someone else?
