3. Quotation Marks Quotation marks are used when someone is speaking or when you are stating someone’s exact words. Example: “Where did you go yesterday?” asked Maria. Always place commas and periods inside the quotation marks. Example: Marissa said, “I can not go today.” Use a comma to set off a quotation. Example: Marvin asked, “Where is your notebook?” A new paragraph is started every time a different person talks.
