1 Quotation Marks Do Now #4: Add quotation marks and punctuation to the following sentences: 1. Hi said Julissa I haven’t seen you in a while 2. Where are you going asked Mario Today’s Objective: Students will evaluate and apply their knowledge of quotation marks and punctuation by Reader’s Workshop, working on Acheive3000, and working collaboratively. Today’s Standard: Written and Oral Conventions 1.4: Demonstate the mechanics of writing and appropriate English usage.

3 Quotation Marks Quotation marks are used when someone is speaking or when you are stating someone’s exact words. Example: “Where did you go yesterday?” asked Maria. Always place commas and periods inside the quotation marks. Example: Marissa said, “I can not go today.” Use a comma to set off a quotation. Example: Marvin asked, “Where is your notebook?” A new paragraph is started every time a different person talks.

4 Reader’s Workshop: Quotation Marks As you are reading today, look for quotation marks. Copy down the entire sentence in your notebook and underline the quotation. Be ready to share at least one example sentence with the class by the time reading has ended. We will now be reading independently. Remember, reading is thinking, so we must remain silent during this time.
