Do Now

Homework Policy After September 25, 2015 there will be no make up for the homework. If HW is turned it late, it will be marked down one point for every week its late. You have a whole week to turn it in. Homework due every Friday in the box.

SAE Annotations Underline the major points. Circle keywords or phrases that are confusing or unknown to you. Use a question mark (?) for questions that you have during the reading. Be sure to write your question. Use an exclamation mark (!) for things that surprise you, and briefly note what it was that caught your attention. Draw an arrow ( ↵ ) when you make a connection to something inside the text, or to an idea or experience outside the text. Briefly note your connections.

How to Annotate

Do Now:

Quiz Review

What is a Catapult? Essential Questions: What physics topics have we covered that apply to catapults?

Forces Acted on Catapults With ancient catapults, there were four main energy storage types: tension – usually bending wooden arms and letting them spring back torsion – using twisted ropes to spring the arm forward gravity – uses a falling counterweight to propel the arm forward traction – powered by people pulling on ropes attached to the arm

Types of Catapults

Do Now:

Objective Students will start lab report and hopefully start building.

Your Task Your resources are limited (like all engineers), your army is gone, but you must still take down the Castle. Challenge yourself to use the elements of medieval technology to build a mini-catapult and blast castles with Marshmallows! Then Face-off to see which contraption has the best combined accuracy, force and construction.

Lab Report: You will have to write a lab report with your elbow buddy. Both of you should have the same report in your notebook to be turned in on Friday. We are starting reports today!

Step One: Question What is your question? If I build a mini Catapult what is the average speed of the object launched by my catapult?

Step Two: Hypothesis What is your prediction?

Step Three: Materials List the materials you will need for the experiment.

Step Four: Procedure Write down your procedure step by step/ Written on paper to copy. 1.Stack four popsicle sticks……….

Do Now: Do not write with Lab report!

Build Time Build with materials provided. Be Careful! Work with Elbow Buddy. Limited time, so do not mess around! We need to be on our best behavior and seated at all times.

Data

Do Now:

Data Make sure to convert your answers into m/s. Make sure to calculate your average speed. Add all your speeds and divide by the number of speeds. (4 since there was 4 trials).

Step 7: Analysis Explain the data you collected in words. Similar to observation but now you are just talking about the data and not what was observed. First start talking about what you collected in the chart. Ex: The distance collected is the distance that the catapult launched the projectile.

Step 8: Conclusion The conclusion is a summary of your experiment from start to finish. Begin by explaining the purpose of the experiment. Answer these questions at the end of your conclusion: 1.What forces were acting on the catapult? 2.How many physics topics were covered in this experiment?

Notebooks Due Next Week! You got lucky!
