1 Student Objective Explain how speed of an object relates to the energy of that object. To identify the 2 different forms of energy Warm Up What is energy? *When BOTH you & your partner have WRITTEN down your answers, share them with each other.

Hot Wheel World Record Jump video clip What did you notice about the design of the ramp? How do you think the engineers got the car to do the jump? What did you notice about the track and the car? How was the car different from cars you usually see people drive? How were the tracks different from the streets in your neighborhood?

Explore Activity As an engineer, how would you build a ramp to get your Hot Wheels car to go as FAR as it can?? Materials: Hot Wheels car Ramp Meter stick Observations: (in your notes section) How did you build a ramp that made your Hot Wheels car go the farthest?

Observations Discussion: What do you think caused the car to go farther? Do you think the type/size/shape of car your group used affected your results?? Question: How exactly does a steeper ramp affect the distance a car travels? Think: Does double, triple or quadruple the ramp height mean double, triple & quadruple the distance? Hypothesis: Write your hypothesis UNDER the data table on your worksheet.

Materials: Hot Wheels CarMeter Stick 3 TextbooksCalculator Procedure: 1.Build a ramp using 1 textbook. 2.Start car at top of ramp & let go (do NOT push). Record distance traveled from end of ramp. 3.Repeat 2 more times & record distances. 4.Calculate average distance for the 3 trials. 5.Repeat same procedures using 2 textbooks and then 3 textbooks. 6.Create a bar graph of your average distances. Label your units of measure on the axis. 7.On your own notebook paper, draw a picture that shows your ramp with 3 books.
