乐 清 中 学 张 慧

Well that’s how I felt about joining classroom observation, which means a lot of teachers gather together to observe one lesson. But now I believe that I should open up my mind to things because eventually I might just find it very rewarding. Have you ever not wanted to do something so badly that you would rather die than go?

“You may wonder, Sir Percival,” said Laura calmly, “if I am going to ask to be released from my promise to marry you. I am not going to ask this. I respect my father’s wishes too much.” His face relaxed a little, but one of his feet kept beating the carpet. Sir Percival felt very ________ during his meeting with Laura. nervous

One day, my father came to me and said, “I want you to do the dishes on Sunday morning so your mother and I can work the crossword puzzle together.” “The dishes?!” I asked. “Anything wrong with taking over the dishes, son?” I started to say something about a man’s job or woman’s work, but I knew immediately that my argument would fall on deaf ears.

Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star”.

But just before I turn 8, things began to change. I watched two buildings on my block burn down. I remember seeing my neighbor Pito go up and down the fire escape to get people out. Where were the firemen? Where was the truck? Somebody must have called them. That same summer, after serving two tours in Vietnam, my brother was killed in the South Bronx. He was shot above the left eye and died instantly.
