3 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: Students will be able to determine the causes of the Dust Bowl by creating a timeline of the events that caused the Dust Bowl. Students will be able to understand the impact that the Dust Bowl had on individuals affected by the The Dust Bowl Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will have to know the events leading to the Dust Bowl and the events that followed. Students will accomplish this through filling in a timeline with the events taught to them throughout the lesson. Process/Skills: Students will be able to use primary information to determine their own opinion on the causes of the Dust Bowl and the impact that it had. Values/Dispositions: Students will be able to practice all of Krathwohl’s Taxonomy by collecting information, and then discussing and working through that information with their fellow classmates.

4 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: This lesson will teach students about the causes and impact of the Dust Bowl on the Southern Plains during the 1930s. Students will learn about the role that humans and the environment played in causing the event, and also the impact that the Dust Bowl had on the individuals affected by this event. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 16.B.5b (US) Analyze how United States political history has been influenced by the nation’s economic, social and environmental history National – NCSS Themes Era 7: The Emergence of Modern America (1890-1930) Standard 3: How the United States changed from the end of World War I to the eve of the Great Depression 3B :Explain the role of new technology and scientific research in the rise of agribusiness and agricultural productivity.

5 Logical/Mathematical

6 Logical/Mathematical This intelligence could be addressed through students breaking down the numbers related to the agriculture production during the 1920s and 1930s. Students will be given numbers and graphs, and from this information they will have to infer what these numbers mean and how they relate to the events of the era.

7 Verbal/Linguistic

8 Verbal/Linguistic Students will listen to interviews from the Library of Congress, and then they will describe the interview to the class. They will discuss the background of the interviewee and the impact that the Dust Bowl had on this individual.

9 Musical/Rhythmic

10 Musical/Rhythmic Students will be able to listen to and study the music that came about from the Dust Bowl. This information will come from the Library of Congress collection that includes recordings from the Dust Bowl.

11 Visual/Spatial

12 Visual/Spatial Students will be able to study images and videos from the Dust Bowl. These images will come from the Library of Congress and videos will come from the PBS documentary American Experience: Stories From the Dust Bowl.

13 Body/Kinesthetic

14 Body/Kinesthetic Students will be introduced to a group of luggage similar to what individuals from the Dust Bowl had to carry when they were forced to move from the Southern Plains to another area of the country. This will help students understand what these individuals had to deal with during the Great Depression.

15 Interpersonal

16 Interpersonal Students will work together to create a timeline of events related to the Dust Bowl. As a group they will determine the major events that need to be included, and they will also be allowed to include any information that they learned on their own from their work with the Library of Congress.

17 Intrapersonal

18 Intrapersonal Students will bring together the information that they have been introduced to, and they will write a journal from the perspective of an individual affected by the Dust Bowl. They can use the images, videos, interviews, and music to create this product.

19 Naturalistic

20 Naturalistic As part of their journal assignment, students will write an entry related to the impact that humans and the environment had on causing the Dust Bowl. Students will use information that they have learned through the lesson to determine what they will include in their work.

21 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Visual Learning and Assessment: Visual Learning, Assessment, and Online Resources: Assessment: 1. The students will be assessed based on their timeline and journal entries. The journal project will have a rubric to help students understand what is required of them on this project.
