3 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: SWBAT understand how the Great Depression changed America and how economics takes part in the Great Depression. SWBAT Objectives: Content/Knowledge: SWBAT compare and contrast the events of the Great Depression. Process/Skills: SWBAT compare and analyze events from the Great Depression. SWBAT use online sources to gather information. Values/Dispositions: SWBAT understand the position that people were in during the Great Depression.

With teaching about the Depression the students will have an insight on some of the hardships America has felt. 7 Show the students a video clip from PBS's The Great Depression: Stories of a Generations's Struggle for Democracy.http://documentary-films.tv/film_depression.html This website has an overview of the story that will be told After the clip is shown students will work in pairs to create a timeline of the major economic and social event that are related to the Great Depression In the timeline student will not only put the date of the event but also describe what happened and who was apart of the event. Objective

9 Students will research headlines from the time period of the Great Depression. Students will then write their own story as if they were a reporter from that time period. The story must include information about the stock market crash, and what they think will come next. 11 Positive/Strengths Introduce the students to the New Deal created by FDR and all of the programs and jobs he created by the New Deal. After reading about the New Deal and having a group discussion have the students gather in pairs. In their pairs they will talk about the positives and strengths the New Deal gave to the American people. The students will create a list of the strengths and why they believe that they are strengths. After the list are created the students will then have a class discussion of why they think those items were the strengths. 13 Introduce the students to the New Deal created by FDR and all of the programs and jobs he created by the New Deal. The will state the weaknesses and why they believe that. If there is a strength that they now believe is a weakness they must state why they thought it was a strength and what made them change their mind. Negatives/Weaknesses

15 Creative You are now FDR and in the positon to try and turn things around and save America from the Great Depression. What are you going to do to help out the Americans who are looking up to you to save them from this situation. Research can be done and you may use the New Deal as model, but do not copy the New Deal. Also do you believe that you solution would bring America out of the Great Depression with out the help of the World War? 17 You are now the President of the United States during the Great Depression. The New Deal is starting to fail and World War 1 never happened. As the President what will be your next step to try and bring America out of the economic downfall.

In their journals they will state what they have learned and what they liked most and least about the activities done. Their journals should be written clearly and with proper grammar.
