3 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: SWBAT: use multiple forms of thinking to complete the assignments. SWBT: understand the events that shaped the United States. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: SWBAT: to engage in an activity that allows them to analyze accounts of the event of the American Revolution. Process/Skills: SWBAT: create posters, newspaper articles, and use multiple forms of sources to locate their answers. Values/Dispositions: SWBAT: understand the values that the Colonial people had.

4 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Rationale: It is important for students to learn about the Revolutionary War, for it was the War that won the freedom of the States. With learning about the War, the students will be able to learn the insights of our Founding Fathers. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.5 Compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.6 Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and differences in the point of view they represent CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.7 Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently National – NCSS Themes Culture; Time, Continuity, and Change; Power, Distribution, and Consumption.

5 Objective

6 Students will be divided into groups and be provided a poster board. They will be assigned a battle from The Revolutionary War. Such as: The Battle of Lexington and Concord, The Siege of Fort Ticonderoga, The Battle of Bunker Hill, The Battle of Yorktown, The Battle of Quebec. The students will then research that battle and create a visual representation of what happened. Once the maps are finished the students will present their maps to the class. Objective Materials needed Computers, poster board, markers, colored pencils, crayons, pencils. 7 Intuitive

8 Students are going to research an important person who contributed to The American Revolution. Students will pick their person off of this website http://www.theamericanrevolution.org/people.aspx After the students have completed their research, they are going to create a story based on that persons life. The students will have to create their story from the point of view of the person they researched. Intuitive Materials needed. Paper, pencils, Biographies, computers

10 Positive/Strengths Have students examine the Declaration of Independence. Discuss the benefits and values that the Declaration gave the colonial people at that time. 11 Negatives/Weaknesses

12 Negatives/Weaknesses A classroom money system will be set up and the students will receive a certain amount of money. Once a week there will be an option for the students to spend their classroom money. However after some time the students will start being taxed for going to the bathroom, borrowing paper and pencils, not sitting in their chairs correctly, ect. The taxation will continue throughout the course of the week. At the end of the week the teacher will open a class discussion about the taxation. Comparing and contrasting how the colonists felt to how they felt. After the discussion the students will write a reflection of what they learned. Materials needed Classroom money, stations to spend money, paper, and pencils

13 Creative

14 Creative Have the students learn about the early American flag. The history of the flag and the significance behind the flag. After learning about the American flag, have the students group in pairs and have them create their own flag. Materials Computer, papers, glue, wooden craft sticks, stars, markers, color pencils, crayons.

15 Thinking About Thinking

16 The students are going to have to create a news paper article about what they have learned throughout the Revolutionary War. They will pretend to be reporters and write about an account that they had witnessed. http://www.pbs.org/ktca/liberty/chronicle.html

Each activity that they have done will allow them to use their knowledge to create a story, poster, map, or new paper article.
