2 Purpose of Evaluation “…assess the performance of college faculty, with emphasis on the strengthening of instruction, and to make recommendations toward continued employment.” “…to monitor and to assist the contract faculty member in meeting the responsibilities for the position…” “…to assess and advise the contract faculty member of his/her professional strengths and weaknesses, and make reasonable efforts to encourage and aid him/her to overcome any deficiencies.”

3 Purpose of the Process “…to determine if the contract faculty member continues to exhibit the professional competencies and qualifications consistent with the job announcement…”

5 Timeline

6 Frequency Once during the first semester of employment and once in the spring of the first year Each fall for following three years Every fall for contract faculty who are not eligible for tenure (typically those in categorically funded programs)

7 The Process – Committee Selection Formation of Committee in First Four Weeks of the Semester Composition: 3 tenured faculty in the contract member’s discipline or one closely related, if they are not available 1 of whom served on the hiring committee Members appointed by seniority as possible (they cannot be required to serve on more than 2 committees) Department Chair Academic Administrator, who chairs the committee

11 Committee’s Primary Duty “…make a recommendation regarding…continued service…” “…assist the contract faculty member in meeting and fulfilling the job- responsibility…”

12 During Meeting Review Procedure and Agree on Process Committee establishes: Scope and process “…manner by which the contract faculty member can receive assistance.” Assign a member to review syllabi _4O

13 Written Record Chair will issue a written record of the scope and process within 5 working days _5R

14 Evaluation Packet Minimum requirement Written administrative and peer reviews from classroom visitations Student surveys of all classes (or alternative instruments for non teaching faculty) Review of Syllabi Establish tentative professional growth goals and evidence of subject-matter proficiency

15 Evaluation Packet Options: Adherence to course outlines of records Communication skills Exploration of alternative delivery methods Timeliness and accuracy of Class I records and reports for which he/she is responsible Fulfillment of flex-time obligations Involvement in student activities
