Block 1 A

 The endocrine system consists of numerous glands that all have the same objective.

Hypothalamus Thymus

 The hypothalamus gland is located just above the brain.  The thymus gland is located in the upper part of the chest.

Thymus  Function: transforms lymphocytes.  Role of thymus: improves a child's immune system. Hypothalamus  Function of the hypothalamus: Sends out nerve signals to various muscles  Role of thymus: Maintain homeostasis.

The glands are responsible for making: Thymuses Thyrotrophic Gonadotropin Growth Hormone Corticotrophin Somatostatin

 Thymosins: stimulates antibody production.  Thyrotropin: stimulates and regulates activity.  Dopamine: releases chemicals

 Gonadotropin: stimulates the production  Growth hormone: chemical substance

 Corticotropin: peptide hormone and neurotransmitter.  Somatostatin: release of somatotropin by the pituitary gland.

 Thymoma: a tumor from the epithelial cells of the thymus.  Thymic carcinomas: disease in which malignant (cancer) cells will form outside on the surface on the thymus.

◦ Adrenal Insufficiency: occurs when the hypothalamus or pituitary gland doesn’t make adequate amounts of the hormones. ◦ Hyperparathyroidism: The disease causes the parathyroid glands to lose its control mechanism.

 The hypothalamus gland is an important center in the brain  Mass of tissue located in the neck, chest and also in most vertebrate animals.

 1) Where is the location of the Hypothalamus?  2) Name 2 types of diseases that are caused by these glands?  3) What is the function of Thymus?  4) What is the function of Hypothalamus?
