Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 1 WPM What’s behind the icon? Work Programme Management

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 2 WPM is an application programme running on the ETSI corporate network. It provides access to the ETSI central database used for tracking all technical work conducted by ETSI technical bodies – including partnership projects such as 3GPP. A simplified, read-only, version of WPM is available via the web for external browsing: http://webapp.etsi.org/WorkProgram/Expert/QueryForm.asp This presentation deals with the ETSI-internal application and is intended primarily for the benefit of MCC personnel.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 3 WPM uses ETSI nomenclature which differs in some respects from 3GPP nomenclature, and this can lead to confusion … WPM term Work Item project 3GPP term specification / spec work item :::::: You have been warned!

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 4 On opening WPM, you are confronted with the “Work Item Select” window.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 5 There are three tabs with a variety of fields you can use to select the Work Item records of interest.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 6 Tab 1: fields related to the identity and ownership of the items Reference id Deliverable type / number Responsible committee / working group

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 7 Tab 2: sundry fields Title STF Current state (drafting, in Public Enquiry, published, etc.) EC mandate

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 8 Tab 3: relational fields and rapporteur Keywords (AND combination possible) Projects (AND combination possible) Rapporteur (editor) name

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 9 In addition, it is possible to distinguish between “active” and “stopped” items. “Active” includes completed items (published deliverables) – even those which have been withdrawn. It is not restricted only to items which are still being worked on.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 10 For 3GPP work, WPM holds two types of records … The first is the “generic” record. There is one record per spec per Release. The second is the “deliverable-specific” record. There is one record per spec version published by ETSI.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 11 Consider first the GENERIC records … These have the deliverable type “3TS” or “3TR”, depending on whether the underlying 3GPP document is a Technical Specification or a Technical Report.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 12 For example, take 3GTS 22.002. Record for Release 1999 (version 3.y.z) Record for Release 4 (version 4.y.z)

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 13 Release 1999 record has Reference ending in “v3”. Release 4 record has Reference ending in “v4”. The spec number TS or TR Working Group D = original document R = revision (i.e. subsequent release)

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 14

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 15 1 st line of title is always “3 rd Generation Partnership Project”. 2 nd line of title is always the full name of the responsible TSG. 3 rd line of title is the technical part of the title of the spec, followed by the Release identity in parentheses. 4 th line of title is the technical part of the title of the spec (only). Scope field should bear a technical description of the work to be performed – or if not available, just a copy of the working title.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 16 When a new version in the same Release of the spec is produced – normally by the approval of a Change Request …

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 17 1.Open the record for update. 2. Choose “user- specified milestone” procedure. 3. Select the last line of the schedule. 4. Insert new milestone.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 18 4. Enter the milestone name in the form “TSG#n” or, for GERAN, “GERAN#n” where “n” is the meeting number. 6. Enter as target date the day after the last day of the meeting which approved the CR. 5. Enter the new version number of the spec. In the case of the “usual” meeting arrangement whereby TSGs RAN, T and CN meet concurrently, followed by TSG SA the following week, the date entered should be, for all specs regardless of “ownership”, the day after the end of the SA meeting.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 19 7. Check that the rapporteur’s name is correct. Verify it by comparing it with that shown in the MCC database.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 20 8. When the spec has been made available in the Specs area of the 3GPP file server (and not until!), enter the date this was achieved. The difference between the target date and the achieved date is used for statistical performance checking.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 21 When a version corresponding to a new Release of a spec is first created, it is necessary to create a new record. (Remember, one record per spec per Release.) 1. Open the existing record for the previous Release.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 22 2. Duplicate it.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 23 2. Change D to R if necessary. 3. Document type should be already correct. 4. Change the last digit to correspond to the version number for this Release. 5. Check that the WG is correct. If it is not, you need to change it in the previous Release(s) record(s) too! 6. Schedule setting = “default”. 7. VERY IMPORTANT! Select option “Revision”. 8. Do not copy comments.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 24 9. Other fields should be OK. Duplicate! 10. And confirm.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 25 11. Update.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 26 12. Enter spec number. (Gets lost during the copying process for some unknown reason.) 13. Edit the title to show the correct Release.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 27 14. Choose project code for new Release …

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 28 15. … and remove code for previous Release.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 29 16. Select surplus milestones in schedule... 17. … and delete them. 18. Confirm.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 30 19. Edit scope to indicate update to next Release.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 31 20. Add a remark: “Record created”. 21. Save.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 32 The remaining procedures are as for updating an existing record …

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 33 22. Enter the milestone name in the form “TSG#n” or, for GERAN, “GERAN#n” where “n” is the meeting number. 23. Enter the new version number of the spec. 24. Enter as target date the day after the last day of the meeting which approved the CR.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 34 25. Check that the rapporteur’s name is correct.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 35 26. When the spec has been made available in the Specs area of the 3GPP file server enter the date this was achieved.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 36

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 37

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 38

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 39

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 40 For 3GPP work, WPM holds two types of records … The second is the “deliverable-specific” record. There is one record per spec version published by ETSI.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 41 Consider now the DELIVERABLE-SPECIFIC records … These have the deliverable type “TS” or “TR”, depending on whether the underlying 3GPP document is published as an ETSI Technical Specification or an ETSI Technical Report.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 42

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 43 Click “Duplicate” to create a new WI record based on the present one.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 44 You will be offered this panel.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 45 Deliverable class: “R” indicates a revision of an existing item. Only use “D” for a brand new deliverable document (spec).

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 46 Deliverable type: will probably be same as previous: TS = Technical Specification TR = Technical Report

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 47 Serial number: use existing value modified according to these rules:

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 48 If moving to a new year’s release, increment the number at the end. This shows the major version number. Here we see 03.46 v7.x.x i.e. release 1998. Change this to 8 for a release 1999 spec i.e. 03.46 v8.x.x. 0346Q70346Q8 Rule 1

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 49 If providing an update to an existing release, add a suffix R1. If there is already a suffix R1, change it to R2. (Or change R2 to R3, etc..) Here we see 03.46 v7.0.0 (say) being changed to 7.1.0 (say). 0346Q70346Q7R1 Rule 2

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 50 Leave the creation date as the current date unless there is some very good reason to change it.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 51 The new WI probably belongs to the same committee. If not, change it as necessary.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 52 You probably wish to make only a single copy. WPM can make multiple copies if you wish.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 53 Normally start with a clean schedule (milestone set) by selecting “Default”.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 54 Check this if there are comments associated with the original record which you want to retain in the new one. Normally, do not copy them.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 55 When you click “Duplicate”, after an ‘are you sure?’ panel, the original WI record is copied, incorporating the changes you required. Click “Update” to make the necessary manual changes to the new record...

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 56 These fields will reflect the changes you made whilst making the duplicate record.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 57 You must now update the necessary fields of the new record as shown in the following slides...

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 58 The title will be unchanged...

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 59 … except for the version and possibly the Release year.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 60 Enter new ‘Scope’ field text. Hint: The scope field describes the work to be undertaken in developing the deliverable. It is not the text of the scope clause of the final document.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 61 Check that the rapporteur identity is correct; enter the new one if not. Hint: If there is no current rapporteur, enter the name of the committee’s support officer.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 62 Verify the Support Officer identity.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 63 The project set will be unchanged, unless the new WI relates to a different release: delete the old release project and add the new.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 64 Clear the pages counts (‘paper’ and ‘soft’).

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 65 Add a ‘secretariat’ comment to justify the creation of the new WI. Hint: ETSI rules demand that you furnish four supporting ETSI member organizations in a separate comment. This rule is ‘relaxed’ for SMG and 3GPP!

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 66 Most other fields can safely be ignored. Except the ‘schedule’:

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 67

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 68 You must modify the ‘stock’ schedule proposed by WPM to eliminate irrelevant milestones. You can also add sets of milestones (then delete the ones from the set you don’t want).

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 69 You can add individual “user selectable” (code 5S) milestones. You can - and must! - modify the milestone text to describe the step desired.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 70 Remember to fill in the date the event was achieved... … and to indicate the version of the spec at that time.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 71 http://webapp.etsi.org/WorkProgram/Expert/QueryForm.asp WPM is also available on the web (read-only):

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 72 So much for theory. Now let’s see a worked example...

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 73 MCC expert provides a new version of an existing spec. 1

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 74 Identify the WPM Work Item which pertains to this spec. You can use the ‘status’ database to help you in this... P:\mcc\Databases\Status_SMG-3GPP-combined_JMM\status_smg_3GPP.mdb Run query jmm_Spec_Search--SMG+3GPP_with_MIs

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 75 Find the spec of interest in the list. Take care to choose the correct version. Note that in this instance, no WI yet exists for v6.2.0 - so start with the latest of the same Release which does exist.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 76 Take this WI reference (copy it to the clip board if you wish).

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 77 Insert (paste) the same WI reference into the “Full Search” field of the WPM “Select Work Item” screen. Click “Find”. The WI appears. Open it.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 78 The WI record opens. (Depending on your screen settings, you may see a multi-tab version of the same thing.) Click “Duplicate” to create a new record for the new version of the spec.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 79 Within WPM, the “Duplicate Work Item” window appears.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 80 Ensure the “Class” is R (for “revision”) Add R1 to the WI reference (or change R1 to R2, etc.).

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 81 Ensure the “Technical Body” is correct. Many GSM items have been moved to a WG of a 3GPP TSG. If necessary, change the TB using the pull-down list.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 82 It is normally not useful to copy over the schedule... … or the comments. Click “Duplicate”...

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 83 … and confirm the creation of the new WI.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 84 The new WI record is created. Click “Update” to make changes.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 85 (GSM 02.07 version 6.2.0 Release1997) Title: change version no. Scope: indicate CRs at meeting no. CRs at SMG#31. Check rapporteur name. (Type in correction if necessary, and select from list offered if more than one match.) Check Support Officer name. Clear page count.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 86 (GSM 02.07 version 6.2.0 Release1997) CRs at SMG#31. Schedule: eliminate unwanted milestones. Milestones 2 to 7B can be selected... … and deleted.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 87 Schedule: choose US milestone.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 88 Schedule: select “Start of work” milestone. Schedule: click “Insert after”. Schedule: The new US milestone appears. SMG#31 Schedule: Enter free text into milestone.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 89 Schedule: enter the version number resulting from the plenary meeting. Schedule: enter the achieved date for milestones 1 to 8 as the last day of the meeting. Schedule: some (calculated) target dates appear automatically.

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 90 Add a comment. Record created. save

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 91 save - then close

Click to edit Master text styles –Second level Third level –Fourth level »Fifth level 92 The End !
