WHAT IS THE SILVER AWARD? The Silver Award is rewarded to Girl Scouts who complete at least 40 hours of community service. It is the second award in a series of three: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

MY PROJECT I chose to work with the elderly for my Silver Award project. I planned activities, visited, and cooked meals. I made house visits, volunteered at nursing homes, and made decorations for holidays to brighten to lobbies of nursing homes. I volunteered primarily in one nursing home, but made visits to a few others. My main goal was to help the elderly in any way that I could.

TIMELINE 1.First, I needed to determine a project. My mentor and I had many different ideas. We decided on working with the elderly, because it was a realistic goal and it was a great cause. 2.After we decided on a project, we had to then decide what exactly I was going to do with the elderly. We decided that I would plan group activities, visit, and help at the nursing homes. I would make meals for elderly that can’t leave their homes, deliver the meals, and visit.

TIMELINE CONTINUED 3.I then had to call nearly all the local nursing homes to ask if they would allow me to volunteer. If they agreed, I had to plan a time to come in. 4.Finally, once I had all the dates and times planned out, I had to begin cooking, planning, and making visits. I visited three different nursing homes and delivered meals to three different homebound elders. 5.To complete my project and earn the Silver Award I had to turn in documentation of my project such as pictures and a summary of all of my activities.

SHENANDOAH NURSING HOME I volunteered at this nursing home for the majority of my project. The activities director was very welcoming and had a lot for me to do! I thoroughly enjoyed my service project, and felt that it was great experience. I learned a lot about service and the importance in giving back to your community. It was such a privilege to see the appreciation that the elderly I helped had towards me. That was the best reward. Earning my Silver Award looks great on a resume, but it gave me something that I will hold very dear for the rest of my life; value in community service.
