1 Escalator

2 What does this invention do?
This invention helps speed up modern transportation. An escalator is a moving stairway. It takes people from one floor to another, just like an elevator. But a escalator can transport many more people than an elevator can in the same amount of time.

3 Who invented it?  The escalator was invented in By a Massachusetts man named Nathan Ames. The escalator was redesigned by Charles Seeberger in 1897, who created the name 'escalator’. “The word escalator lost its proprietary status and its capital "e" in 1950 when the U.S. Patent Office ruled that the word "escalator" had become just a common descriptive term for moving stairways." (Bellis) At first the escalator was an amusement not a transport.

4 The importance of an escalator
The escalator is very useful. It helps people get from one floor of a building to another. Before everyone would have to keep walking up and down the stairs. They have the capacity to move large numbers of people, and they take up the same space as regular stairs. “They have no waiting interval (except during very heavy traffic), they can be used to guide people toward main exits or special exhibits, and they may be weatherproofed for outdoor use.” (Bellis)
