Emissions Understanding and the Global Energy System Transformation Paulette Middleton paulette@panoramapathways.net Panorama Pathways, GEIA, ISES, ASES http://www.panoramapathways.net Emissions understanding helps -Identifying sources of impacts -Create strategies to address them -Evaluate success of strategies. Analyses show transforming global energy system from fossil fuels to renewables reduces harmful emissions.. The transformation is accelerating and improved emissions understanding is helping

https://www.ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report/ar5/wg3/ipcc_wg3_ar5_summary-for-policymakers.pdf To reach safe concentration levels, dramatic emission reductions from Fossil fuel combustion are needed. This means a transformation in the global energy system. Climate Change RCP2.6 provides best path for climate recovery Fossil fuel combustion is responsible for the emissions in all sectors except agriculture and forestry.

http://www.htap.org/meetings/2013/2013_12/Thurs/Maenhout%20HTAPv2%20Emissions.pdf Improvements in air quality also depend on dramatic reductions in combustion of fossil fuels. Transforming the global energy system from fossil to renewable energy is needed. Air Quality Fossil fuel combustion is Dominate contributor in all sectors except agriculture.

http://www.ren21.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/GSR2015_KeyFindings_lowres.pdf POWER: MORE RENEWABLES CAPACITY ADDED THAN COAL AND GAS COMBINED HEATING AND COOLING: SLOW GROWTH BUT VAST POTENTIAL—KEY FOR THE ENERGY TRANSITION TRANSPORT: DRIVEN BY BIOFUELS, WITH E- MOBILITY GROWING RAPIDLY Progress continues in all areas Technology Grid Integration Storage Efficiency Wise Use Investments Public Acceptance Energy Assess Jobs Security ….. How is the transformation of the global energy system going?

How improved emissions understanding continues to help Renewable energy resources are huge!! But solar and wind are variable. Variable solar and wind resources use in electricity grids Is optimized by Improved air quality forecasting which is improved by better emissions characterization. Source: Windlogics/FPL (Adam Kankiewicz) DeSoto, Florida 25 MW PV Plant Clouds and high aerosol concentration Due to dust storms, fires, and air pollution Reduce the solar resource. Moving forward Improved emissions understanding Helps assess effectiveness of the Energy System Transformation and the Need for other aggressive strategies.

THANK YOU Keep up your great work!! -- Learn More about renewable energy progress – -- Monthly Free Webinars – International Solar Energy Society http://www.ises.org/home/ Tighter pollution standards aimed at protecting human health, coupled with rapid societal and land use changes, have increased the urgency for producing accurate, comprehensive, and harmonized emissions datasets. GEIA community members serve as sentinels, translators, and communicators of emissions and their impacts. By sharing, analyzing, and synthesizing up-to-date emissions knowledge, GEIA informs regulators and policy-makers engaged in environmental protection, pollution mitigation, and adaptation strategies, and increases the capacity for understanding emissions around the world.
