CATTLE DRIVE

Cattle Drive Game  You hired 18 cowboys and rounded up 1,000 head of cattle  Your journey is 4 weeks long  You have to pick a cattle trail  Your choices will determine how much money you make

Sedalia week 1  Poison stew kills two cowboys  - 2 cowboys

Chisholm  Rattlesnake bite kills one cowboy  - 1 cowboy

Western  Group of cattle rustlers steal 140 of your cattle  - 140 cattle

Goodnight-Loving  Lightning storm causes stampede, 30 cows go missing and one cowboy dies  - 30 cows  - 1 cowboy

You have made it to week two  Where do we stand?

Choice A  Herd panics crossing a busy river, 50 cows perish  - 50 cows

Choice B  You find some unbranded cows  + 40 cows

Choice C  Menacing farmers block your way (why?) you get in a gunfight and lose 3 cowboys  - 3 cowboys

Choice D  Cow disease hits your spotted cows  -150 cows

You’ve made it to week 3!  Where do you stand?

Choice 1  You run into outlaw gang lead by Black-Jack Mulligan. He kills 50 cows because he is a jerk  -50 cows

Choice 2  Freak blizzard hits your trail and causes many cows to freeze  -100 cows

Choice 3  Hail storm hits your herd of cows  -150 cows

Choice 4  Natives block your path and demand payment for crossing their land- you choose to pay up  -100 cattle

You’ve made it to your destination!  First thing first- get out your calculator/phone  You must subtract 50 cattle for any missing cowboys. You should have 18 cowboys, any less and you need to subtract  Example- you have 15 cowboys you must subtract 150 cows

How much money do you make before expenses?  Sedalia Trail- 15 dollars per cow  Lack of rain means that your cattle arrive to market in poorer condition

How much money do you make before expenses?  Western- 18 dollars per cow  Cattle market is booming

How much money do you make before expenses?  Chisholm- 19 dollars per cow  Demand for beef is up  Price of cows X # of cows = income

How much money do you make before expenses?  Goodnight-Loving - 16 dollars per cow  During the last week your cows had insufficient grass to eat causing them to lose weight

How much money do you make?  Price of cows X # of cows = income

Now you have to pay your people  You owe $50 per month to each cowboy PLUS a cook for their work  You owe $125 per month to your trail boss You must pay for 3 months work (1 month on the long drive and the previous 2 months to round up all of the wild longhorns)

Now you have to pay for horses  You buy 18 extra horses for the cowboys for when their horses tire out. ($100 per horse)

Provisions  You must provide for a month’s worth of food and supplies for 20 people, you must buy a fully equipped chuck wagon and the mules or oxen to pull this wagon. ($500 for food & supplies and $1250 for the mules and wagon)

Total Expenses  Payroll + Horses + Provisions = Total Expenses

How much did you make?  Income – Expenses = Final Profit

What did we learn?  What was it like on the drive?
