The Concept of Safety There are NO completely safe PE or SPORT activities Sometimes the word “SAFETY” can create false assumptions and expectations There is always the RISK that an accident may occur

“Safety Practices” The adoption of standard operating procedures to create “acceptable” levels of risk Successfully managing risk involves “judgment” – Common Sense!!!

Safety is understanding, it is an attitude of mind – it is not necessarily a simply following of rules or directions. Garry Richards

Risk is reality….. Safety is a fantasy

Risk is at the heart of all education. Willi Unsoeld

Dynamics of Accidents Environmental Hazards Human Factor Hazards Risk Potential

RISK…. Perceived Risk Actual Risk Both must be embraced for their potential to promote personal growth in our clients. Risk is an inherent element in SPORT, and without it SPORT would not exist!

Risk Management “reducing the chances of injury, damage or loss be taking steps to identify, measure and control risks”

Managing Risk “What if” thinking Continuously anticipating unexpected problems and mentally rehearsing emergency responses Maintain a “safety margin” for skill & knowledge Responsibilities of participants – self, group

….Managing Risk Teach participants emergency response skills Listen to your “inner” voice The experience should model those real and perceived risks students will encounter in their professional and personal lives

Steps in Risk Management 1.Identify – what possible things can go wrong? 2.Measure – how likely is it these things can go wrong, and what are the consequences? 3.Control – what can we do to keep things from going wrong?

Are we too obsessed with the risk of loss? Fear of litigation What are the risks associated with not taking risks? – Loss of potential growth opportunities – Fear of failure

Risk is also about GAIN One of the reasons people stop learning is that they become less and less willing to risk failure. - John W. Gardner

Learning Zone ‘The Edge’ Panic Zone Comfort Zone

GROWTH = CHALLENGE X SUPPORT

NEGLIGENCE “carelessness” – when a professional’s conduct falls below the standard expected for the activity Duty of CARE & Standard of CARE Occurs most often in sport lawsuits Negligence: – Supervision – Emergency procedures – Equipment – Instruction

Principles of Supervision Always be there! Qualifications – CPR/First Aid Be active & hands-on Know participants’ health status Monitor and enforce rules/regulations Monitor environment Inform participants of hazards/dangers Be vigilant and in control Be careful, prepared and trained
