2 Substitution Prior to the start of the game, what is the status of the team members that are entitled to play? Prior to the game all members of the team entitled to play are players – there are no substitutes. What other time of the game is this applicable to? During an interval of play

3 Substitution When does a substitute opportunity begin? When the game clock is stopped and the ball is dead. The official(s) on the court stops the game for a jump ball, violation, foul, injured player, etc. Following a successful final or only free throw After any free throw that is followed by a throw-in at the centre line extended In the final 2 minutes of the 4th period or the final 2 minutes of any extra period if the team that has been scored upon from the field requests a substitution(s)

4 Substitution When does a substitution opportunity end? When the ball is at the disposal of the free throw shooter or thrower in What is the substitution procedure – Mechanic? Upon notification from the scorer, the official shall blow the whistle and give the substitution signal and beckon the sub(s) into the game. One whistle per substitution sequence The nearest official will take care of the sub(s)

5 Substitution When does a substitute become a player? When the official beckons them into the game During an “Interval of Play” or a charged time-out, substitution(s) shall report to the scorer not to an on court official. When does a player become a substitute? When the replacement is beckoned into the game When the replacement reports to the scorer during a time out The substitute(s) must report to the scorer in all instances.

6 Substitution What is the substitution procedure in regards to free throw activity? Any and all substitution(s) shall be completed prior to the first or only free throw or after the final successful free throw. If a violation occurs on the final free throw that results in a throw-in to the opponents, any substitution(s) shall be permitted. If a throw-in is to take place at the centre line extended following the final free throw If there is a violation resulting in an additional free throw – no substitution is allowed

7 Substitution The substitute for an injured player entitled to shoot free throws - shoots the free throws for that injured player

8 Substitute After a substitute enters the game, when may he be substituted? When the ball becomes dead after a clock running phase After a player is substituted, when may he re-enter the game? When the ball becomes dead after a clock running phase If the team has less than 5 players eligible to play

10 Time-out How many time-outs is each team entitled to? Each team is permitted 2 time-outs in the 1st half, 3 time-outs in the 2nd half with a maximum of 2 in the last 2 minutes of the 2 nd half. 1 time-out for each team in any extra period. How long is a time-out period? Each time-out is 50 seconds in length and play shall resume at 60 seconds. Who may request a time-out? The Head Coach or the Assistant Coach make the request to the official scorer.

11 Time-out When does a time-out opportunity begin? When the game is stopped by an on court official. During the entire game, if the team that has a field goal scored against them requests a time out Following a successful final free throw by either team After any free throw that is followed by a throw-in at the centre line extended The timer shall stop the game clock and inform the officials that a request has been made. Should the officials fail to hear the horn; the timer shall NOT start the game clock even if the ball is thrown in bounds. When does a time-out opportunity end? When the ball is at the disposal of a free throw shooter or thrower in

12 Time-out What is the time-out mechanic? Upon recognition of the timer’s horn, the closest official shall stop the game, blow the whistle, give the time-out signal and indicate which team has requested the time-out. The whistle and time-out signal starts the time-out period. During the time-out, both teams shall remain in the team bench area until the horn sounds that ends the time-out. The official who called the time-out shall immediately blow the whistle to indicate the time-out is over.

13 Time-out How is a time-out assessed if both coaches request a time-out prior to the next opportunity? The Coach who requested the time-out first is entitled to the charge time-out. Exception, if the team that is scored upon from the field was the second coach to request the time- out. The time-out shall go to the team that was scored upon.

14 Time-out What is the rule for a time-out granted in the final 2 minutes of the 4th period or overtime period(s) With 2 minutes remaining in the 4th period or 2 minutes remaining in any extra period; the team that is awarded a throw-in in their backcourt requests and is granted a time- out, shall have the ball advanced to the front court throw in spot opposite the scorer’s table.

15 Time-out Time-outs shall never be granted during an “Interval of Play” Extra time-outs are not permitted. If one is granted it is a scorers error and not a Technical foul A time-out cannot be shortened for subs only – the opponents are entitled to the entire 50 seconds
