STOP™ For Each Other focuses on:
Everyday Safety
Safety of co-workers
Conditions as well as actions
Peer-to-peer communication
An educational approach
Important STOP™ For Each Other concepts include:
“Seeing Safety”
“We depend on each other.”
“Show me you care, make me aware”
Everyday safety – not just auditing. The program covers formal observations in the final unit, as another way to use the observation and communication skills learned in the program.
Safety of co-workers. STOP™ For Each Other emphasizes how peers rely on each other to work safely in the workplace. It’s not just about personal safety.
Conditions as well as actions. STOP™ For Each Other highlights how the interaction of people and conditions work together to produce safe or unsafe situations.
Peer-to-peer communication. STOP™ For Each Other encourages a mindset where safety is an everyday discussion, not just completing a formal observation.
An educational approach. Thinking and reflection are encouraged, instead of learning through repetition and rules.
“Seeing Safety.” The organization becomes attuned to safety so that the individual automatically notices safe or unsafe practices throughout the workplace and home. Also called “Making Safety Second Nature,” this mirrors the way DuPont employees are sensitized to safety.
“We depend on each other.” Peers rely on themselves and each other to stay safe.
“Show me you care, make me aware.” The program gives peers permission to talk with each other about safety.

4. DuPont STOP™ For Each Other
STOP™ stands for DuPont’s Safety Training Observation Program, which is aimed at preventing accidents and injuries.
Participants learn the following:
“All injuries can be prevented.”
How the actions of people affect safety.
How to observe themselves and others for safety and to use the STOP™ Safety Observation Card to develop skills in seeing safe and unsafe conditions and actions.
The steps to discuss safety with others and the importance of creating an atmosphere of respect.
How to conduct formal safety observations using the STOP™ Observation Checklist .

5. DuPont STOP™ For Each Other
The Program:
Consists of a Kickoff Meeting, 5 training units and a Refresher six months later
Self Study Workbooks
Field Activities and Group Discussion Meetings with videos on DVD

6. The Sessions Kick-off Meeting Unit 1 – Introduction
Unit 2 – The STOP™ Safety Cycles
Unit 3 – Conditions, Positions of People, PPE, and Tools & Equipment
Unit 4 – Procedures, Orderliness, Reactions of People, Talking with Others
Unit 5 – Conducting Formal STOP™ Safety Observations
Unit 6 – Refresher Unit
Unit 1 - Participants learn about the STOP™ principle that “all injuries can be prevented.”; The workbook, field activity, and group discussion meeting help people “see safety” and take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others
Unit 2 - Introduces participants to the steps in the STOP™ safety cycle; Participants learn how to observe themselves and others for safety and how to use the categories on the STOP™ Safety Observation Card; They learn the technique of Total Observation to be sure a situation is safe; The field activity and group discussion meeting focus on how to use the STOP™ Safety Cycle and the Conditions side of the Observation Card
Unit 3 - Participants learn how the actions of people affect safety
They become familiar with the Condition categories on the STOP™ Safety Observation Card; They learn how positions of people, PPE and Tools & Equipment affect safety
The field activity and group discussion focus on using the Conditions side of the Observation Card to observe their work area and themselves
Unit 4 - Participants are introduced to three (3) categories on the Actions side of the Observation Card; Participants become familiar with the steps involved in discussing safety with others; They learn the importance of creating an atmosphere of respect and trust during safety discussions; The field activity and group discussion focus on using the STOP™ Safety Observation
Unit 5 – Explains the vital role formal safety observations play in preventing injuries; Participants learn how to use the STOP™ Safety Observation Cycle in conducting formal safety observations; what to look for in during formal safety observations; How to make safety contacts; the group discussion in this session is a wrap-up of the program
Refresher Unit – 6 months later this unit reinforces the learned concepts & techniques

7. Mermet Roll-Out of the Program
Completed April 2015 – Managers and Supervisors
September 2015 – First Responders and Safety Committee Members
Will train the remaining employees over the next year
As new employees are hired, we will begin putting them into training classes as well
