1 Early Native American Settlements Native Americans home were designed for the areas they lived in. LONGHOUSE Built with pole frames and elm tree bark covering. Tribes stay in the same place for a long time. TEEPEE made of a cone-shaped wooden frame with a covering of buffalo hide. Teepees designed to pack up quickly so tribes could follow buffalo herds (main source of food) Pueblo Adobe Homes (Adobe is clay and straw baked into hard bricks) multi-story houses like apartments.

5 Settlement at Jamestown, Virginia 1606  Virginia Company gets a CHARTER; a legal document that gives rights to a person or company  Problems settlers faced:  Swampy land area  Mosquitoes: spread disease  Lack of clean water supply  Starvation  Native Americans

9 Settlement at Plymouth, Massachusetts 1620 Pilgrims came to practice their religion freely Known as Separatists- they wanted to separate from the official church, The Church of England. Pilgrims came from England on the Mayflower. 100 men, women, children 2 month trip

10 What was government (charter) like in Plymouth? Mayflower Compact Established rules for their settlement Agreed to consult one another about laws for the colony and promised to work together.
