1 Welcome to Mrs. Nakamura’s 5 th Grade Find your child’s desk and have a seat. The papers on their desks are yours to take home. Read the letter they wrote you and jot them a message back if you have time.

2 Mrs. Nakamura O 19 th year teaching O Taught 5 th grade at Discovery last 3 years and Cougar Ridge & Endeavour for previous 3 years O Stayed home with my own children O Prior to that, Northshore School District in Gifted Ed, Mukilteo Regular Ed O Have taught 4 th, 5 th & 6 th grades O Enjoy reading, running, gardening and time with family and friends O A Life Long Learner and loves teaching!

6 Planners/Organization O Planners will be filled out daily and students need to check them every night O I will be posting nightly on the class website the homework for the night. Click on the Homework tab O Long range planning using the planner O Organizing binders and filing all papers behind dividers O Regular notebook checks O Students need to be learning these skills this year to be ready for middle school

7 Class Website\Technology O Mrs. Nakamura’s Class web site Mrs. Nakamura’s Class web site O Updated Daily with Parent Newsletters, websites, handouts for assignments, up coming dates, class photos and nightly homework, web resources O As the year progresses we will post student work/projects on private class sub site, students will blog on various curriculum topics, class photos on private site O Class has 6 Netbooks to use in addition to 2 desktop and 8 laptops. O iPad will be used as a teaching tool as well as for projects O These items will be used to enhance the curriculum

8 Homework O Expect homework Mon-Friday, 30-60 minutes O Math homework most nights, O Long term projects at times will need to be done over weekends O Students should be reading at least 20 minutes nightly-reading logs will be used periodically but students should always be reading! O All students should have mastered basic multiplication and division facts O Missing assignment=in at recess to work on and complete at home O Absent- email (please give me advanced notice) and I will gather work to send home-math sheets are online, check the website O Keep me informed if the amount of homework is too little or too great

9 Grading O Papers, test and assignments will be scored with 1-4 O The 1-4 scores will have +/- but not on report cards (3 is a large range) O Check Friday folders for scored work to stay aware of your child’s progress O Report cards are no longer printed and sent home. Parents will access them on Skyward O Conference sign up will be on Skyward as well in mid-October.

10 Curriculum O Follow the Issaquah District Curriculum O Science focus: Life Science-Plants/Physical Science-Motion & Design/Fossils/Scientific Method/FLASH (Human Growth and Development) O Science Fair participation required O Social Studies: American History –Geography, Exploration, Colonization & Government, Museum of Famous Americans O Math Every Day Math & online IXL to reinforce skills and concepts, problem solving-Exemplars O Reading strategies taught just right books, book room guided reading books as well as Readers Workshop – 5-6 book projects for the year, Vocabulary Word Lists related to what we are learning in class most weeks, 10 books from a variety of genres should be read over the course of the year O Writing-Writers Work shop focusing on various forms starting with narratives, informational, persuasive, memoir- Writing Curriculum Lucy Caulkins O Technology integration-computer as a tool throughout the curriculum: Powerpoint presentations, word processing of work, Google docs and presentations, etc.. O Art –six art lessons using a variety of mediums tied to State standards guided by a trained artist O For more detail about the 5 th Grade Curriculum Standards visit OSPI and information of Common Core State StandardsCommon Core State Standards

11 Supplies/Volunteering O Follow list posted on school website, replenish as needed O USB Flash Drive is needed and should come to and from school daily, keep in back pack or binder O Volunteers needed form was emailed out as a Google doc - starts in Oct, schedules are posted on website. O Sambica/Pure Foods Workshop/Library/Biz Town in May/Energy Workshop O Process has changed: sheet with how to do a background on every student desk, must be authorized every year if you plan to be in at all during the year.
