Representation of Social Groups

Women When researching into how woman are portrayed on the front covers of music magazines they are shown in one of two ways, this being powerful or powerless. On the front cover of this CLASH magazine Rita Ora looks sophisticated and in charge. She is wearing minimal makeup as well as sophisticated clothing. The way in which she is sat on the chair looks like she has authority and power. However women are also shown to powerless. This being overly exposed to attract a wider audience. The majority of women will buy a magazine with a woman artist on if they like their music whereas men are more likely to buy the magazine for liking the music or go for ‘eye candy.’ For instance on this Rolling Stone magazine front cover Fergie is basically wearing her underwear, which is unnecessary when she is a music artist not a lingerie model. The way in which women are sometimes publicized is wrong, I don't think they need their body exposed to attract readers. In my magazine I will make sure that if I have a female artists they will not be showing half of their body to the world as its about music!

Men I found that when looking at music magazines, males dominate front covers. This could be for reasons such as there being more male artists who have been successful and dominating the music industry or them just being easy on the eye to look at as well as being a good music artist. Men are portrayed in two ways as well. One being relaxed the other the complete opposite, which is serious. On this front cover of this Rolling Stone magazine the artist Macklemore is shown to be smiling. He his relaxed, and doesn't need to be suited up to prove he is an incredible artist! Where as on the front cover of NME magazine Kasabian look serious. The use of the camera angle and the way the lead singer Tom Meighan is staring at you with a blank expression shows power. The way in which they are positioned gives the sense of authority. In my magazine I will make sure if i have a male artist they will be shown as equal too a female one.

Disability Disability isn't shown in music magazines. It would be extremely rare to see any music artist with a disability on a front cover or included in a magazine however it has been done. For example the Rolling Stone magazine covered Stevie Wonder who is a superb musician and is listened to world wide, however it is still extremely rare to see. Yes firstly it is rare to find musicians in general who are disabled, but by it being rare doesn't mean there isn't any. Do we choose to ignore disability in music because its not classed as ‘normal’ and fear for change? Its now the 21 st century and the music industry is changing but still choose to ignore disability. In my music magazine i will make sure if there is a talented musician who suffers form a disability and are in the genre of music my magazine is, they will be mentioned and spoken about because it would wrong not too.

Ethnicity When looking into ethnicity in music magazines, you can see how in recent years its changed. Before it would be a dominant fact that only black artists where shown to rap, whereas nowadays you have people such as Eminem and Macklemore. The way in which ethnicity is presented in a music magazines is still shown in a stereotypical way. Its common for black artists to be shown in a strong and independent way, also the way in which they are dressed can give across a thug look. For example the VIBE magazine front cover shows a black artist in a baggy shirt and muscles flexed, with a blank facial expression almost makes it intimidating to look at whereas compared to the Rolling Stone front cover Macklemore is smiling and has an innocent look about him however they are both rap artists. In my music magazine i will make sure that the artists i include will all be shown equal to one and other. It wont be stereotyped.
