1 Other Objects in the Solar System
Dwarf Planets, Comets, Meteors, Meteoroids, Meteorites, and Asteroids

2 Dwarf Planet- Is a celestial body that is in orbit around the Sun
Has sufficient mass for its self gravity for it to assume a nearly round shape Has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit Is not a satellite

5 The Dwarf Planets Pluto Ceres Eris Haumea Makemake

6 Pluto Was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh
Is rocky and ice covered Is considered a “double-planet’ Maybe be from the Kuiper Belt Is sometimes closer to the Sun than Neptune Has five moons. Charon is the largest. Has an atmosphere of methane and nitrogen Takes 248 years to orbit the Sun

11 Ceres Was discovered in 1801 by Piazzi Is located in the Asteroid Belt
Was the largest asteroid until 2006, when it was reclassified a dwarf planet

12

13 Eris Is a little larger than Pluto Was discovered in 2003 by Brown
Takes 557 years to orbit the Sun Has one moon (Dysnomia)

14

15

16 Haumea Was named for a Hawaiian goddess Was discovered in 2004
Is shaped like a plump cigar Has two moons (Hi’iaka and Namaka)

17

18 Makemake Discovered in 2005 Takes 310 years to orbit the Sun
Appears reddish in color

20 Other Objects Orbiting the Sun
Comets, Meteors, and Asteroids Other Objects Orbiting the Sun

21 Comets Are celestial objects that orbit the Sun in a long, elliptical path May be from the Oort Cloud beyond Pluto May be compared to a dirty snowball Two of the most famous are Halley’s and Hale-Bopp

22

23 Parts of a Comet Nucleus- solid core of frozen water, gases, and dust
Coma- gases around the core Tail- dust and gas forces off the coma by the solar wind (The tail ALWAYS points away from the Sun.)

24

25 Halley’s Comet

26

27 Meteors, Meteoroids, Meteorites
Are the same object, just in different locations Are small, rocky or metallic bodies revolving around the Sun Are smaller than an asteroid May originate from asteroid collisions, remains of comets, from Moon and Mars

32

33 Asteroids Asteroids are small, irregularly shaped, rocky bodies that orbit the Sun, primarily in the Asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter .

34

35

36

37 Kuiper Belt Is a region of the solar system that begins just beyond the orbit of Neptune. Contains small bodies made mostly of ice A Kuiper Belt object (KBO) is any of the minor bodies in the Kuiper Belt.

38

39

40 Oort Cloud Is a spherical region that surrounds the solar system
Extends almost half-way to the nearest star Comets can form in the Oort Cloud (long-period comets which take hundreds or thousands of years to orbit the Sun.)
