Illegal Organ Harvesting

 The list of people who are in need of organs is substantially longer than the amount of people who are willing to donate.  Therefore, those in need of an organ donor have begun to offer money.  However, the majority of people do not receive their full amount or any money after the donation is complete.  Receiving money for an organ is only legal in India.

 Therefore, if the individual would like to receive money after the donation, they have to do it very discretely and without the doctors or governments knowledge.

Thesis  Stricter regulations with donating organs will eliminate illegal organ trafficking.

 More people would be willing to donate an organ if they were able to choose who it went to.  And when a doctor sees on your license that you are an organ donor and you are lying in a hospital bed, on ventilators, the doctors will encourage your relatives to take you off the machines. They do this because they no longer have faith that the patient will recover so now they are focusing on receiving that individual’s organs so that someone else’s life may be saved.

 The Human Organ Act bans the sale of organs, except for relatives.  On the other hand, they also say that people can sell organs to other patients that they feel “emotionally close” to.

 The Human Tissue Act regulates the removal, storage, use and disposal of human bodies, organs and tissue.  However, if a deceased individual arrives at the hospital, without any identification, doctors have been known to remove some of their organs.  Therefore, if the body cannot be identified within 24 hours of arrival, then the doctors will begin to remove their organs without any consent or rights of doing so.

 The people in Moldova, or Europe, are murdered for their organs and then dumped onto the side of the road.  There has also been instances where “the victims would be drugged, then waking up naked in a bath tub full of ice with their kidneys removed.”  “10% of all kidneys donated worldwide originated from Moldova.”

 China has strict laws on organs harvesting; however, they allow Americans to fly to their hospitals and they will have either fresh organs or organs that have been stored away for a couple of days awaiting their arrival.  “In recent news, China has out a stop to hospitals in 2007 by restricting transplants to foreigners and giving first priority to Chinese patients.”  This has not stopped foreigners from traveling to China for organs and there have been cases reported where individuals have toured or vacationed there and had their organs taken and donated without consent.

 If stricter laws were given, such as the requirement of consent forms, written documents stating how much the donor would receive, and allowing individuals to receive money for doing so.  The World Health Organization estimates 11,000 illegal organ transactions took place in 2010.
