OBJECTIVES  We will understand the characteristics of expressways  We will apply risk-reducing strategies to enter and exit traffic, steer, establish speed and lane position, pass other vehicles, and travel on multiple-lane roadways  I will be able to demonstrate my understanding of expressway numbering.

JOURNAL #5 12/1/2014 In regards to passing you have to make sure its “legal, safe, and worth the risk”. Explain this quote. In at least 4 sentences.

Module 6 TOPIC 1 ~ EXPRESSWAYS ~

FREEWAY DRIVING CLIP Write down 5 tips that you learned from watching this clip at the bottom of your “Finding the Gap Worksheet”

Module 6 – Topic 1 1.Characteristics of an expressway.  Controlled access  High speed traffic  Divided by a barrier  Vehicle restrictions  Multiple lanes 2. As speed increases, steering input to maneuver the vehicle decreases.

Module 6 – Topic 1 3a. MERGING Evaluation: determine speed of traffic, select a gap in traffic. Execution: adjust speed to speed of traffic & merge into gap 3b. TAILGATED Evaluation: Maintain speed and check to see if another lane is available. Execution: Increase space margin in front of vehicle and if possible change lanes as soon as possible.

Expressway Numbering ~Even numbers go east-west (I-64, I-66) ~Odd numbers go north-south (I-77, I-81, I-95) ~Odd numbers begin in the west and get larger as they move east ~Even numbers begin in the south and get larger as they move north 3-digit numbers designate an alternate route ~If the first digit is even, the alternate route goes around the city (I-664) ~If it is odd, it leads into the city (I-164) http://www.bing.com/maps/?FORM=Z9LH2

HIGHWAY NUMBERS

Module 6 TOPIC 2 ~ ENTERING/CHANGING LANES/AND EXITING ~

Entrance Ramp ~The entrance ramp allows drivers to enter the ramp and begin searching for a gap/open space ~Accelerate to speed of traffic ~Determine the open space and merge safely Entrance Ramp Module 6 – Topic 2

1.Three parts of an expressway entrance  Entrance  Acceleration  Merge 2. 1. 2. 3.

Entrance Ramp Problems ~Heavy traffic, short ramps and acceleration lanes ~High walls that may block visibility ~Traffic ahead on the ramp that slows or stops abruptly ~Sharp curves on the ramp that restrict visibility On-Ramp Module 6 – Topic 2

Merging—Selecting a Gap ~Check Front Zone ~Check Rear and Left Rear Zones ~Select Gap ~Identify a Target Area in the Open Space and Merge ~Heavy traffic ~Lack of a gap ~Traffic slowing or stopping ahead Merging Problems ***When a driver is attempting to merge onto the expressway, help them by adjusting speed or changing lanes if it is safe to do so Merging Could adjust speed or change lanes Module 6 – Topic 2

3. When approaching an expressway ramp you should search for the following:  Entrance number, directions & other destination information  Signs indicating “Wrong Way” or “Do Not Enter” 4. The purpose of the acceleration lane is to accelerate to speed of traffic. 5. You should NOT do which of the following when merging onto the expressway. -Search for conflicts- -Stop- -Be prepared to drive onto shoulder if necessary- -Create space around your vehicle-

Module 6 – Topic 2 6. Four reasons to change lanes on an expressway: 1.Allow other drivers to merge onto the expressway 2.To pass 3.When the lane ahead is blocked 4.When following large vehicles that block your vision
