6 IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO SOMETHING, ASK! BEFORE YOU START THE MACHINE: Study the machine. Know which parts move, which are stationary, and which are sharp. Double check that your work piece is securely held. Remove chuck keys after use. Machining Safety

7 DO NOT LEAVE MACHINES RUNNING UNATTENDED! CLEAN UP MACHINES AFTER YOU USE THEM! A dirty machine is unsafe and uncomfortable to work on. Do not use compressed air to blow machines clean. This endangers people's eyes and can force dirt into machine bearings. Machining Safety

8 Some guarding is interlocked and the lathe will not start unless the guard is in the correct protective position DO NOT LEAN ON THE GUARD WHILST USING THE LATHE

16 Other materials such as Nylon can also be machined on a lathe

17 If there is a need to reduce the diameter of a long piece of material a centre lathe is ideal for this type of work. Usually one end of the material is held firmly in the chuck and the other is supported by the tailstock centre.

33 Before any turning takes place it is common practice to check that the point of the lathe tool is centred. This means that the lathe tool point should be the same height as the tip of the tailstock centre.
