School Library Media Center Facility Plan Karen H. Carter 10/6/2012

Aerial View of the School The library (circled in yellow) is located at the center of the school. There are approximately 740 students in grades K- 5, making up 34 regular classrooms and two self- contained EC classrooms.

Circulation Desk The circulation desk is centrally located in the library space and provides a view of the entire library.

Class Instruction Area with Interactive Whiteboard This area is used for whole classes and for small group work. Computer access is available at various stations throughout the library. There are 12 desktop computers in all.

Views of the Fiction Section This area is used for storytelling, and other activities which allow a class to be seated on the floor.

Reading Area Comfortable seating and a small periodicals section

Media Office and Workspace The workspace in the office also houses DVDs and VHS tapes from the Teachers Collection.

Teacher Collection/Workroom The Teacher Collection Includes science equipment, 3-D models and other materials for use in classroom lessons. This workspace contains office equipment such as a copier and laminator. This area is regularly used by a wide variety of school staff members.

Production Studio The production studio allows students to broadcast the morning news and announcements via closed cable TV.

Display Spaces Display areas include window spaces, and the tops of bookcases. Displays include book-related items and student work /projects.

Library Decor One of the best-loved features of this particular library is the artwork that adorns the walls. Painted by the school’s long- time art teacher, the murals depict the cover art and illustrations of favorite children’s books.

Literacy Lab Although not technically considered part of the library, the Literacy Lab is attached to the main floor space and houses material sets for class use.

Concerns/Needs  Clearance in instructional area is not always in compliance with ADA recommendations  Clearance around computer station in the reference area is not currently in compliance with ADA recommendations  Lack of adequate signage for sections/desk  Need for more comfortable seating  Need for greater computer access (to accommodate research needs of an entire class)  Need for repair/replacement of worn furnishings

Laptop Cart (15 HP laptops, cart) $14,156 installed CMS quote This price could be lowered a bit by leaving out the printer. $18,599.50

Changes would likely need to take place over a period of two to five years, due to the cost of the laptop cart. In the meantime, the Computer Lab could relocate the existing laptop cart to the library for use when the cart is not checked out for a class. The school’s PTO is extremely supportive; especially when it concerns technology. They might be willing to direct income from one of the semi-annual book fairs or other fundraisers towards improvements in the library. Final Thoughts
